Is Sound Card Type Crucial for Mixing Imported Files?

Hey Evurbuddy,
I'm recording with my H4N and importing .wav files (tracks) into my laptop and mixing/EQing in Cubase SE. I used to record with a mic thru a board, external MAudio sound card and into Cubase. I find it easier the way I'm doing things now.

Here's my question: Do I need to use a good sound card for mixing/EQing my imported files, or does this only apply to recording (and will my laptop's cheap stock card do)?

Your sound card will have no direct effect on the quality of the audio, but if it's not giving you an accurate idea of what you're doing it will skew the results. That said, the monitors you use will probably have a much larger effect on what you hear.

Thanks BSG,
I wondered, after I posted, if the stock card's poorer sampling rate might do that. I appreciate the feedback. Think I'll start using the external card again and run out to the monitors from there. I guess that would give a more faithful rendition of what's actually being mixed.

NEVER use an onboard soundcard. Period.

Any time you start making judgement tweaks, EVERY part of the chain is important.

Anything you EQ though a 40-cent onboard soundcard is going to be very iffy....
