Is my Shure SM57 a fake ?

3 or 4 years ago, when I didn't know any better, I bought a pair of insanely cheap Beta 58a's from an ebay seller in China. I used them for quite a while before it even occurred to me that they might be other than the real thing. They seemed to work fine, sounded good, no horrible feedback, etc. Hanging out here at the mic forum prompted me to do some research, and best I can tell, they are neither real nor fake, but something in between. Many of the parts (capsule, xlr pins, housing, logo, etc.) fit the description of a real Shure. Others don't (wiring colors, no blue grill rubber band, incomplete paperwork, accessories). One of my band mates suggests it might be some kind of "B" stock. Who knows? I guess the point is (as stated many times on this forum) you don't know unless you buy from an authorized dealer.

sure shure oohhbis

Thread necromancy.

Does your mic sound good? It does?

Don't worry about it.

yes sounds great but that's the first mic that i bought, really. so i want to know, cause the person that sold it to me guarantied that it was a sm57, matter of honesty...

I think is Fake, the upper part on the "R" on the shure logo shoudn't be higher than the rest of the logo and the sticker that says "dynamic microphone" should be very sharp printing and matte

Well, send it to Shure and have them identify it. Really, this isn't a forensic evidence forum. You're not going to be sure, since you'll get a number of differing opinions.

Next time, buy new. Guarantees given verbally by a seller aren't worth much, are they?

I personally bought 5 from a pawn broker arround 1998 for $20 bucks each...they all weigh out fine...but 2 have the extra keyhole...they were older mics when I bought them...at least 10 years of wear.

I did see a fake at a pawn shop earlier...the label overlapped and it had thinner lettering...they had it at $89 and said it wasnt fake because of the package.

The OP's mic looks real, but note this. Although the SM57 is made in Mexico, the bags are made in China- all of them. And they all say "Made in China" inside. The older ones may have been made elsewhere.-Richie
