Is my demagnetizer working ?

I have a TEAC E-1 in apparently unused condition. It buzzes when I turn it on but it fails to affect my magnetometer no matter how close I get to it. Ok, maybe the pointer moves a hairline but I'm not even sure it's from the E-1, it's so slight. I know the magnetometer works 'cause I get a substantial reading off of my speakers and even parts of the recorder, like nearer to the capstan motor ... Any thoughts ?

Thanks! :)

If you have a compass, the needle will follow the demagnetizer if held very closely. A demagnetizer has very little influence even an inch away. We’re dealing with infinitesimal flux compared to the magnet in a speaker… or even the magnet on your refrigerator. :)

Another way to test it is to try to pick up a single staple from a Swingline type stapler. It should just be able to pick it up.

Since the demagnetizer is alternating rapidly the magnetometer may not be able to react fast enough to show a steady reading. The electromagnetic pole of the demagnetizer changes 120 times per second, based on a 60 Hz AC frequency, or whatever your AC frequency is where you live.

I'm happy to report that the E-1 picked up a staple from just under a cm away! :) Thanks for the info, as always, Tim! :) ;)

I believe i have the same one (Teac)
Demaging aside, It's great to tell ppl "Hey don't touch the end!!!" or to chase your GF around with, that buzzing scares the hell out of folks! :)

Hey man, those things scare the hell out of me never mind the girlfriend...
