Is LE5 similar to PT8?

Greetings,

I have an old PT8 that I use with my little mbox2.

I just bought a tascam us-1800 and I understand I'll be getting a free program of Cubase LE5. Im a semi - hack with PT8, but I'm wondering in the Cubase is as easy as the PT8, and is it kind of similar in the way it looks and operates? Are there any immediate things I should know before I do anything?
Seems like a couple of the gang in the PT section said that they though Cubase was a pretty decent program. Just a little nervous with switching...
Thanks in advance for any thoughts you feel an urge to throw in,

Doug

I just wrote an eloquent reply, and my dog stepped on my keyboard, and it is gone.....

Try Cubase LE that comes with your interface. Many here will help you with the software. If it doesn't suit you, try something else. Personally, for me, I cant stand ProTools. My brain just does not work well with it's layout. Cubase does. That is just me.

See what works for you. Reaper is another option that many here use, and praise. It is up to you to feel out what DAW works for you. You will likely never get a more unbiased opinion than this one. Most will just say 'get this, it rocks', or 'Get this, it's almost free', or 'get this, it is the industry standard'.

Ignore all of them. All of the major 5 do basically the same thing. None sound better than another. Some have better editing capabilities, some more setup for audio. That is really for you to decide, after trying the demo's or free versions that come with your interface.

As long as it "looks" sort of like PT8, I'll be good with it. I don't like the fact that PT is forcing me to use a different program by not azccepting Tascam , so then fine, since you have pushed me away, I will go away to Cubase. No problem with that., I'm just tired of not being able to record the entire band at the same time, but individually.

Much easier to track down the errant singing voice with the solo button. Stacking track after track one by one is so yesterday...

Once you get Cubase LE installed, open the Documentation (All Programs>Steinberg LE>Documentation>Quick Start Guide) and proceed to the Quick Start Guide. That will get you going. Come back here if (when) you have issues. :)

Nice, I really appreciate the help!
Thank you! :thumbs up:

I have both pro tools m powered 8 and cubase 5. IMO they don't seem to be alike much at all. :(

But cubase is not hard and a lot of stuff is similar like how inserts work. But the tools are different.

There are things in pro tools that I wish cubase did in the same fashion and there are things in cubase that I wish pro tools had (like folder tracks, and the drum editor I just can't go without them at this point).

They are both easy to pick up in terms of basic function. I will say that setting up hardware with cubase is a little bit more difficult than LE8 or M powered 8 is. But this is because LE8 is made to work with the m box. You have to setup cubase to work with the hardware you are using.
