hey fierywater. I'm in the same pool as you. When I was more naive about where I wanted to go with music, I started growing an interest in the Roland Fantom X series of keyboards. But they were definately too high for my price range and I was thinking that I'd be interested in the whole "realistic sounds" thing, so I bought an RS-50, got a deal for it like $500 total including shipping and a nice hard case on ebay.
At first I was amazed and delighted by the way the machine sounded. Still today I enjoy a lot of the patches, but there's only like 3-4 of them that make their way into my music. I am by no means a skilled pianist, actually I'm horrible at piano and the only instruments I'm skilled at is guitar, drums, and arranging tracks on my computers with (as mentioned earlier) Project 5. I love the software interface and currently I'm working hard to complete an album of the songs I've made. My keyboard is only an overpriced midi controller to me now.
I'm into the modification and warm sound of analog synths and I'd rather have a beat up cheaper Juno from the 80's, or a Jupiter model synth. The Alesis Micron and Ion, and even MicroKorg are of much interest to me now too. I really don't know what to say, but I made a mistake. I should've noticed my style before buying. I'm into rock/electro/dance(not technolight but just good beats), and I guess just a lot of like electronic noises in a rock type of sound.
Anyhow, I hope you read this and im me on aim if you'd like to talk about music and stuff. Have a good one and thanks to everyone else in this forum for good advice, my next serious music purchase will be a nice midi controller and a powerful laptop.
