I'd like some input from people here, cuz people here are generally down on software piracy. I'm trying to work out my own thoughts on this, and it's useful for me to bounce ideas off people sometimes.

Cool Edit 1.2: is it okay to pirate it? It isn't available for sale anymore, right? Adobe's abandoned it, right? There isn't any support for it anywhere, right? So does that mean it should be shared for free among those who are interested in that sort of thing?

Cool Edit 2.1. Same questions as above.

I think Adobe still owns the copyright to that.
It's up to Adobe if they want to release it as freeware. But that'll never happen.

My moral values tell me not to steal software. The reason is that I want the people who worked long and hard to bring us a cool product to be rewarded for their efforts. In the case of Syntrillium, they got payment. And now cannot be payed even if we wanted to pay them.

Now it's Adobe that owns CEP/Audition. Even though they are a big company, they still deserve payment for their product. Even if 90% of the work was done by the guys at Syntrillum and not done by Adobe. They spent a bunch of money an Syntrillium. Most importantly if Adobe sees that Audition pulls good profits, they will allocate more time and effort into making new revisions of Audition even better.

The earlier versions of CEP have some cool features that AA2.0 has done away with. So in some cases it's actually an "upgrade" going to 1.2, but you can't buy it.... so how else to get it?

I'm generally for ligit software but if they've abandoned it, well............

If it turns into freeware, they'd supply it as such. AFAIK, Adobe owns the rights to all previous and future versions (under whatever name).

Okay, so Adobe is still the legal owner of Cool Edit versions 1 and 2. I'm okay with it. That much seems clear, and clarity's good on an issue like this.

But what if I contact Adobe with questions about Cool Edit 1 and 2? Am I going to get support for it? If that's the case, then it's a bit like a landlord who never fixes anything or does any upkeep on the property. They might own the place, but they're not an active landlord, they're not being responsible and in charge.

Just because a landlord doesn't maintain his property does not give you the right to tresspass!

Whether they support it or not they have that little piece of paper that says they DO own it, and that would be good enough for the court systems if Abobe ever wanted to bring charges up against anyone...provided that ever do catch someone.

Perhaps you didn't understand the gist of my previous post. I wasn't enquiring about the legal dimension of the situation; from what people said, I gather that Adobe is the legal owner of the various versions of Cool Edit.

What I *was* wondering about was whether Adobe supported Cool Edit in terms of tech support. The answer is no, right?

When it comes to trademarked material that is NOT the case.

I think lawyers must have written that crap into the law.

Job security.

Dobro, I would say no to your question as well but I don't know of anyone trying get any info from Adobe about any CEP versions. Might make for an interesting investigation though.

Oh just go steal that program and all the others you want! lol

nah im just kiddin... but why even use cool edit pro when audition 2 is SO much better?

Just my 2 cents, but I use CEP because that's what I bought years ago and it is still very well suited to what I use it for. Why buy yet another product when CEP works well?

I think that stealing is wrong, again my 2 cents...

Of *course* stealing is wrong. It weakens social trust and connection.

What I wanted to explore in this thread is essentially two things: the extent of Adobe's legal ownership of Cool Edit (they own it, is what I was told), and the extent of Adobe's support for people who still use Cool Edit. In the context of this thread, I don't really want to talk about whether somebody likes Audition more Cool Edit; for me, that's really off-topic. What I'm interested in finding out is whether Adobe supports Cool Edit, and if the answer's no, then I'm interested in exploring what people feel and think about that.

Public form style.
