O.K. Here it goes. I have been reading stuff in this forum for a few days and 88.62% of what I read is over my head. I just bout cakewalk guitar tracks software and having a blast. Strictly hobby stuff. I'm using a audio technica dynamic mike to record vocal stuff. (Cheapo) I'm just plugging it directly into the sound card. What is my next step up in a mike. This phantom power stuff regarding condenser mike is giving me brain cramps. Any direction as to how to progress and learn is appreciated.

Search and read, Weedhopper. You will be granted wisdom.

Brain cramp cure!!!!!!!!!!!

Listen to your brain cramps!!Buy a quality condenser mic and yes it's going to need phantom power. They sell phantom power boxes for around $30-40 dollars.Depending on how many inputs you have on your soundcard or breakout box I'd look into a little mackie mixer like the 1202vlz,the mixer will have phantom power included.Dynamic mics are definitely useful but until you try a good quality condenser mic you will truly continue having those brain cramps.Go fill your prescription!!!!!!!!:D

your first step up is a decent preamp.....

which AT mic is it....it may be decent enough to pull a usable sound out of it.....you can have a killer mic and plug it straight into the soundcard and its gonna sound shitty....so at least go for a Midiman Audio Buddy or an Art Tube MP....

O.K. the audio technica is a real cheapie. But my brain cramps are begging to release a little. What is an inexpesive way to go with a condenser mic? (I have a wife!)
Maybe I could sell my golf clubs!

ok, but remember with a condenser you need phantom power and a preamp....the Audio Buddy i mentioned will do that for $79....how much can you spend on the mic and preamp without getting divorced?....

btw, i can relate...i have a wife and a 4 yr old.....

??????????????????????????????
?what is that supposed to mean?
??????????????????????????????

Oh so grateful

Thanks for the help --- I checked out the audio buddy around the web look like just what the doctor ordered for my brain cramps -- price is surely acceptable -- now the next step the mic --- what is the starting point of on condenser mics -- maybe some suggestions on ?b rands models etc. ---can you get one for under $200 Will use it mostly for voice and some mikeing of acoutic guitar. What I am doing is just hobby stuff but you know how it is -- always looking for something a little better.

get yourself an sm 57 play with this a while then consider gidges choice of a mxl v67m or g and or an mxl 603 and if your feeling alil richer a studio projects c1 :-)

light at the end of the tunnel

Thanks!

It looks like I should have been in the newbie forum -- but I'm a stinkin Newbie what do I know!

But since I'm getting all this pro advice --- I ain't leavin.

It looks like the midiman audio buddy and condenser mike will help with brain cramps.
Checked out the MXL prices around the web -- Mars was the best
How much difference between the MXL v57 -- and the V67--other that price of course. Can I get by without a shock mount?

one of the purposes of the mic forum is "which mic should i buy".....this was the spot to post it...it is not off limit to newbies no matter what anyone says.....

im not sure exactly the differences of those 2 mics....i have the v67 myself and its great....

if you get it from Abes it comes with a shockmount......

Thanks -- no more brain cramps

Thanks Gidge

Got the mic and a littel mixer --WOW!! I smell a grammy!!
Now on to bigger and more complex questions.

Congrats on the mic and hope it serves you well!

Have fun and send me a pic of you with your Grammy!.....
