hey - has anyone seen any of those dj/producer series dvd's? they have one i was thinking about picking up - 'making beats'

i kno it sounds mad cheesy - but im a SUPER beginner who has a digital 16 track machine and an mpc2000xl sampler.

i kno how to make beats already, but im not familiar with alot of the functions on the track machine and the sampler.

just curious - are they anygood? are they worth the investment? i just wanted some input............thanx

are they worth the investment?

I would say, if you could pay for a service where thousands of like minded music producers are available to answer any question you may have at any hour, day or night....

or......

you could buy a video, I would tell you to go with the service to answer specific questions. Now, the best part is, you have that service here already. and it's free. In my mind, observing and asking specific questions here is a far better use of your time and it's cheaper too!

Save your money for more gear. You're gonna need it.:D

i kno i kno...........

i kno - i figured somebody would say that.

but im so NEW i need help with EVERTYING and i dont even kno where to start.

i tried to use my aw16 digital machine this past sat and i was so FRUSTRATED - i couldnt even get the freakin' thing to record. it took me long enough just to route the signal.

prob just beggining jitters........i dunno.

plus i kno this will sound crazy but hip hop production is not like regular music production, at least i never thought so. i know that sounds crazy - but hip hop is kind of like a bastardized music - we did everthing wrong and used equipment the wrong way to make our music.

but yes this site is great and i guess once i get to the level of figuring out what specific questions to ask i'll come here and post 'em...........i just dunno........

Re: i kno i kno...........

So there are two types of music; hip-hop and regular music? The people on this board make all kinds and styles of music, hip-hop included.

I suggest you just start in the beginning and ask questions along the way. You'll get there eventually :).

btw, you put a 'w' too many in that sentence :D.

yeah.....

well - i think there are many types of music to be honest - more than two types.

i will try to get specific questions and post them - but many of the production styles in hip hop are revolutionary - or were at least, when they were created over two decades ago.

so as a result sometimes im hesitant to ask because im going to get the "by the book" answer; which doesn't always apply, and im sure thats true across many genres of music, but i am only mostly somewhat familiar with hip hop

i just want help to take whats in my head and put it on a cd.....and i am going to need help doing it outside of the box........but i kno im saying all of this in technical ignorance so..............basically i need lots of help

yIkEs!!!

u just HIT me over the head with a TON of info.......now help me make sense of it!!!!

the link i like the most were the artist pro courses - are these free? free online mixing instruction?

Hey prol,

To be honest, no one here is going to limit you to the traditional way of doing things. There is more than enough people rewriting the book of engineering on the mixing clinic. That being said, sometimes innovation requires an understanding of the traditional way of doing things. And sound is sound. Not taking advice from experts because they don't do the same kind of music could be a costly and foolish mistake.

Also, don't be afraid to ask what seem like simple questions. Like I said before, there are MANY people on this board using the exact same equipment as you. They've gone through the growing pains of learning to use the AW16G and the Akai piece. Hell, I think I asked how to turn off a Boss BR-8 once. I couldn't find the power button...

good luck and have fun.

thanks yall

stonepiano - thanks

( and thanks to u too spinsterwun & Laynestaley )

i kno i sounded like a jerk with that last post

i think i left out one point - IM A LAZY BASTARD!!! hahah ahahah - SHOW ME HOW TO DO IT!!! lolol.........

nah but u make perfect sense - now i feel alot better.

look for more threads from me - because i am def. in the learning curve/growing pains stage right now.......i posted a few weeks ago saying that i just got rid of my 4 track tape cassette yamaha and korg dss-1 sampler and made a quantum leap to digital 16 and a professional sampler - man and i am straight up LOST in the sauce.

i gotta admit it is a bit dishearting to invest like that and then not know or have a clue what u're doing......so thats why i sound like that

and yes i do want to learn the right way to mix and record and sample and then add my 'whatever' so that i get the real result - some good music

thanks again and keep the info coming.........
