sorry to bother... but i have a little misunderstanding in my head.

I have a yamaha MG10/2.

the first two channels have inserts
and i have a dbx 266xl compressor/gate

am i correct in thinking that i can apply compression by somehow using the insert with the compressor?

id read my manuals but im at school and left them all home.
i geuss i dont understand insert i/o

any help would be much appreciated,
thanks twice,

http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/IPBQ2Q10/ <---you just need something like that.

On the TRS (Tip, Ring, Sleeve) end you have send on tip, return on the ring, and they share a common ground. (could be reversed, see your manual) But either way one TRS jack is a in and out at the same time, you then just connect, one of the TS ends to the in on the compressor and the other TS end on the out.

So here is the signal chain, your mic, preamp in mixer being the gain control, then sometimes it goes trough the eq section (again see your manual), out of the insert jack, in on your compressor, out of your compressor, back in on the insert jack, on to the EQ section if it already hasn't passed through it, then to the channel fader....

Does that help?

ahhhhhhhh yes that does help!

the second i saw "you need one of these" i thought of that cable.

i tried a rca to 1/8" with an adapter at every possible place but no luck-
i figured it would work... the compressor showed action but i didnt get any response from the mixer... ill try it with a real insert patch cable.

but does an insert bypass the led display for any reason?

thanks for your help again

It would only do that if you're using a TS cable fully inserted - that would cut of the signal to the mains. Once you get a Y-cable and hook it up to your compressor, you should still see activity in your meters.

As far as I know, an insert's send is post-gain, pre-fader. So the returned signal would have an effect on your meter since it would hit the fader, which hits the meters. It goes like this:
Input -> Gain -> Insert Send | Insert Receive -> Fader -> Output
Correct if wrong, I usually only use inserts for sends anyway.

It all depends on how you have it hooked up. As I said before, a TS cable fully inserted will interrupt the signal to the mains, and you won't see anything on the meters. I have the inserts of my mixer connected to half-normalled points on my patchbay, and that allows me to route those channels however I see fit without cutting them off to the mains.

thanks a lot, and nice site. honey roasted eh? me too.
