Industrial Electronic soud modules?

I was just wondering if any of you had any good suggestion for a sound module that would be good for darker electronic/industrial type music like front line assembly, celldweller, or dismantled. I was looking at the access virus rack and the virus b desktop, but I realized that I don't quite know how those work. Do you hook a midi controller up to the rack or the virus c? If not, how are they controlled? Thanks.

As far as controlling the rack Viruses (Virii?), you would need to have a midi controller..

There are a number of good choices, depending on your budget..

In the low, low budget category (under $300), you could scout around for a cheap Fatar midi controller and grab a used TG-33, Kawai K4r, Oberheim Matrix, Ensoniq VFX etc. off of Ebay. You could also grab a used Yamaha An1x, which incorporates a keyboard and thick 10 voice analog synth.

In what I perceive as the next price level, you could get an Alesis Ion, or one of the Waldorf synths (Micro Q, etc.), or one of the keyboard versions of the Novation polysynths. Better yet, keep an eye out for a used JP-8000.

If you choose to use softsynths, you can get a new harddrive, a good midi controller,a good VST-friendly sequencer, a bunch of FREE synths and some FREE effects off the web, and be in good shape for under $500.

I have a Virus A which I use frequently, but I find my self using a lot of older gear when my work (film scoring/commercial music) requires me to get a dense electro-industrial sound.

The Viruses are good choices if you can afford them. They work well with Midi controllers such as this one.

Awesome, thanks for the input. Right now i've got two midi controllers, the MK461c and the radium 61. I'm using various softsynths, such as reason, zero g Altered States, absynth 3, etc... and I'm using the new roland mv8000 (Version 3 just released...). can you think of any reason that I should go ahead and by a virus or ion?

Try some Reason Maelstrom sounds through 2 Screams. If you can't find any appropriate sounds, there is a zip file w/1000+ Maelstrom patches on the Props website --- and it's free too!

I'm all for wringing the last little wince out of gear you already have before you complicate things by buying something new, and one of my favorite wringing targets has been Reason...

The 2 Screams (or maybe 3) is great for industrial-strength drums too.
