I have been working on a Yamaha acoustic guitar that has the piezo undersaddle pickup. The owner wanted a bone saddle fitted. Ever since I installed it he has been back with string level issues. I examined it and refiled and reseated it only to find there seems to be a dead spot. It is only really apparent when played through the pickup. I have ruled out other factors by simply reversing the saddle in the bridge. Whichever strings are under the dead spot on the saddle are weak. It is the B and G strings. I have heard about bone being inconsistent but have never had one. I am about to cut a new saddle but would like some input.

If I advise you on this one you aren't going to getting all hissy fit on me again are you.;)

I am not looking to be advised. I want peoples personal experiences with the topic at hand.

There are two people here with more personal experience of bone as a saddle material here than the rest of the board put together and you are about to lose the efforts of one to build bridges.

You can do one of two things. Show a little courtesy or carry on as you have and get "opinions" or swallow your fat head and accept the advice that is offered. I can tell you in two paragraphs how to sort out the problem you have. The choice is yours but this is definitely the last time I even attempt to be decent to you.

Here we go again!

Can I be courteous enough so that you'll tell me no matter how fat pete's head is?

I have a gallagher with a weak B string through the undersaddle pickup. I just thought the groove in the bridge was of uneven depth and I would deal with it when i start to give 20% more of a shit.

But if you're dispensing with pearls of wisdom, I would be grateful. :D

I anticipate the solution doesn't involve talcum powder.

I believe I have more options than "two things". I have been on the right track with this problem but I was looking for other views from unbiased people.

...between "not be a cock" and "be a cock"? What, "be a little bit of a cock and hope no one notices?" "Be Ron Jeremy?"

No problem, I'll PM you a bit later with a troubleshooting process and a few pointers to look for. Give a me an hour or so as I've just got home and about to have me tea.;)

Just leave now Drew, he's finally burnt all his bridges as far as I'm concerned. If anything I feel concerned for the peoples guitars that he's dicking about with. Anyone with six months to a years worth of bench work would know exactly where the problem is with that undersaddle and how to fix it.

I'm done with it.;)

The problem was the bone saddle. It had different densities in it, it was visible in front of a light with a magnifying glass. the suspicious area was more translucent and therefore less dense. I have since cut a new one and now it works great.
