In what situation is a compressor needed

It seems like it should be the most popular piece of gear here but I rarely hear anyone talk about it.
Well, personally, I talk about it plenty. I've had mine for 10-11 years now, and have installed it in the new studio where it now gets regular use on almost every project we do there.

I think the problem in the HR world is when most people think ART, they automatically think about the TubeMP as the cheap, entry-level device that it is (and is supposed to be), and tend to just just write off the entire ART product line after that, because it's easier to judge products we've never tried by whole brand names than it is by individual products. Which is a big injustice to the VLA series.

I'm totally guilty of that. The first Art products I heard were reverb units in the early 90's and they were putrid. All it takes is a few bad products in a row... you know what they say about first impressions - they only happen once.

But in cars, even the "junk" cars aren't junk anymore. The average is way better than any other time in history. The "best" might not be... but you won't find any modern cars as bad as, say, an 80's Citation. They can't afford to make crap because no one will buy it. I like that, and probably that's happening in music gear too.

Yeah, stigma can be a hard thing for a company to overcome, and ART did have a few problems early on. But I gotta say that after 11 years of use on the road as well as in the studio, my VLA has given me nothing but solid service and good sound. The only problem I had ever had with it was one of the light bulbs lighting one of the VU meters had gone out. Big deal, that can happen to anybody, and it was nothing to replace.

Plus I understand that on the newer VLA II that the old-fadhioned incandescent light bulbs have been replaced with LED light bulbs, eliminating even that potential problem. ;)

:laughings: I've got the ART TubeMP. It's the only piece of equipment I have (other than the instrument equipment and tascam of course) I'm finally upgrading to an M-Audio DMP3.
After looking into compressors more, and hearing the positive comments on the ART I'm pretty excited about getting one :D
There's nothing like experiencing new equipment for the first time

The TubeMP is perfectly OK for what it is. It's biggest problem around these parts IMHO is that people read the word "Tube" and read the hype surrounding the supposed magic of tubes, and expect the MP to deliver world-class "tube" performance. They get disappointed when they discover that it's worth what it costs but, unlike the VLA, is not a box that delivers performance 10x it's price, they shun the entire product line as being like $60 gear.

It's funny now that I've read up on compression- I bought the TubeMP assuming that preamps would do what im now learning a compressor does :p
it only cost me $30 brand new so I figured, what the hell I might as well pick one up and learn a thing or two.
