I tried and liked the PSP Vintage Warmer 2. But, I really want the UA LA2A plug. However, I need the whole uad-1 card... That kinda sucks... I just want the LA2A. What are the options here? Just bite the bullet and spend the cash on the project pak just for the La2a? or.....?

Any suggestions/alternatives?

Buy the UAD if you can afford it. the LA2A is nice, but the 1176LN is even better on a lot of things. The 1073 is great. The mastering bundle is great. Are you detecting a pattern here???? :)

:) NL5, I checked out your website... I had a feeling that you'd be out west... BC area... Northern lights and all... Absolutely beautiful place for creativity!

I like the track! Sounds really nice... did you use one of the uad comps on the vocals? Hey, I really like the vocal sound a lot! :)

I'm in Vancouver, WA - Not BC. It's just outside Portland, OR. And the name Northern Lights comes from the Netherlands. ;)

The vocal in that track has the 1176LN, and the 1073 UAD plugs on it. Both plugs have transformer emulation. IMHO that is what makes tracks sound big and warm - TRANSFORMERS - forget about tubes! :)

And the name Northern Lights comes from the Netherlands.

...and i'll vouch that NL is one of the greatest concoctions in that nation's history

on the other hand, it's not like they don't have a rep. for holding that fort down in the northwest!

Today was just one of those days where I found myself surfin' the UA website; droolin' over the gear... It's too much to take in... I can't handle it!

Plug in g.a.s. is a disease - be careful about getting sucked up in it. I don't think there's any one plug in that you need that desparately. Voxengo has some awesome plugs that are cheaper and just as good as UAD, in my humble opinion. They're just slightly different flavors. I will say that the UAD Plate 140 is killer, but I'm sure there's alternatives that are cheaper and almost as good. I have the LA2A and it's often my go-to comp for vocal, but I could live without it and be just as happy with something else. I have the demo of the PSP and I love it, I just don't need it.

If you dig the other UAD plugs, get the card. If not, just get the PSP. Check out Voxengo too. You can download full-function demos before you buy.

If cash is an issue, you will get a lot more mileage out of Voxengo. Their stuff sounds great, and you could have a comp (Marquis), limiter (Elephant), MBC (Soniformer), and EQ (Gliss EQ) for about $300.

UAD is a must have. It will change your mixes. the LA2A is the best vocal compressor plug I've ever heard. It's not the best every single time, but most of the time I put that up and it stays up. I'm kicking myself for still not having bought the UAD fairchild though. The Pultec is my favorite EQ plugin, I even prefer it to the new neve plugins, it's more versatile, I think. If you get UAD, do yourself a favor and buy the Pultec Pro(has more eq options than the standard pultec), and the plate 140. I couldn't live without UAD.

Haven't tried any new versions, but vintage warmer is cool, but I didn't think it was very versatile.

Voxengo Elephant is an excellent limiter.

I hear that! :)

I just picked up the UAD progect pak and I am pretty impressed. The only thing I can't stand is the latency they put on the tracks. I find myself moving tracks all over the place to get them to sound right. Anyone know any way around this method?

Cubase! :D

Yeah, I don't think I would even bother mixing in a DAW at all if I didn't have automatic latency compensation for the plugins.

BTW, someone really needs to give me a 2nd UAD card. I don't like having to pick and chose what tracks get the good stuff. :D

Hey Reg,

You remind me here of that old Woddy Allen bit:

Diane Keaton: "Would you prefer to have sex with two women?"

Woody Allen: "I'd prefer to have sex with three women, but I have a hard enough time finding one."

Those of us who can't afford their first card will have a hard time sympathizing with your need for a 2nd one, my friend :).

That's what "freeze" is for!

Got stuck back on SX2. Too lazy to do a freeze the long way. Missed out on the $50 upgrade to SX3, and now I think it costs like twenty grand to upgrade from SX2 to SXuendo or whatever it is now.

And maybe you all can pool your resources together to provide me with a second card? I can PM my paypal. Thanks for doing this, I appreciate it. ;)
