King of Bling
I hate dicks who only drop in here when they wanna' post a song...like me. :D

I honestly don't know if I posted the original version of this tune here or not, but some ears would be nice.

"LUCKY"

My 14 yr. old daughter wrote and sang it, and I'm just trying to get it close enough to not break speakers or sheer off eyebrows. Lemme' know what evil things jump out of the mix at you.

Thanks,
The Selfish Bastard.

(credits are on my page, but thanks to "trojka" for the bass and "capablehands" for the drums).

She's 14? Wow.

The vocals sound a little bit muffled. Other than that, it sounds good. Good job.

I'm with geet, the vocals load up around 200-300 Hz.... What type of room did you use to cut the vox???it sounds as if the room might have some LF nodes that the mic is picking up.

thanks guys...I have a decent tracking room with a horribly harsh mic, and I tend to compensate for it by scooping the vocal, which was overdone here. Also, all the enveloping in the world couldn't make the vocal sit right in this mix for some reason, so I squished it and a large part of what you're hearing is cheap plug-in compression. HOWEVER, this can be alleviated somewhat and I'll deal with that right now. Thanks a lot. :D :D

I can't really add much to what was already said, but this: your daughter has some talent there. It's nice to see you developing it. The song sounds great. You say she wrote it? Yep, some talent... :D

Yeah, this one's all her. I cannot find words to adequately express how conflicted I felt when I first heard her sing it; I mean, on the one hand, it's got a pretty cool melodic chorus. On the other hand, it's MY FREAKING DAUGHTER SINGING ABOUT GETTING LUCKY?!?!?!?! - lol...just kill me now.

Wow, this is a great tune. Fantastic song and definately great singing by your daughter. wtg

I must say...your daughter has an absolutely incredible voice.

Forget the songs with you guys singing...have HER sing them!...she has a GREAT voice...

my two cents...

I listened to all the songs...

Hey thanks a lot...ummm...I think, lol. :D - Seriously, thanks for the listen and the comment.

ProToolsuser - thank you very much for listening too.

To keep me from getting confused later, I have to post that I just uploaded a mix with (hopefully) a less cloudy vocal. Thanks a lot for the listens.

Can't really add anything now, but I must say your daughters a talent.

Almost in the way I am..... ;)

Sounds great! She kind of has that slurring-sleepy-modern day female vocal sound.., not a lot of Sheena Easton influence I guess! :D Overall I thought the music backing was kind of thin, sort of needs more warmth and padding. Maybe a little compression/limiting on the vocal perhaps? Just my thoughts..

I wish I could turn my 12 year old daughter into a vocalist!

Much better job on that vocal :)

Nice clean up :)

Another quick question....was diaphragm above or below her nose????

I typically have her sing across the top of this crappy mic to cut down on sibilance, so it was most likely under her nose. She gets her braces off this month, so that'll help a lot too, LOL. Thanks a lot for the repeated listen, Giles...

Shenker - thanks for the ears and the comment. I agree on the thin comment, by the way...I may actually get serious and just mic up a real amp and try to add some textures with guitar...I don't own a keyboard, which would probably help flush this out a lot. Thanks again.

Bazzled - thanks. She's no you, but she's trying, LOL :D

I'd worry more about that nasaly tone than the silibance. There are plent of ways to De-Ess the vocal and it be ok.

So I;d place the diaprgam a bit above her nose bridge (maybe 1/2" or so) Her tone will sound much btter I am sure.....

Hey, thanks a ton. I'd never even thought about that, but I will not forget about it now because I've gotten that "nasally" comment before. Very much appreciated.

For my 900th post I decided that I should reply in this thread.

Nice job again Chris. Still listening on headphones though so I wan't to give it a listen when I get home. Is that Trojka playing bass ?

I love the bridge, but I wonder if the guitars should be brought out more during that part ?

my 2 cents

Well I've just joined up and this is my first reply. I've been reading all the advice for a while now and thought I'd got good. Then I heard that and it's back to the drawing board. Really, you mixed that in your house? Wow. And daughter..vocals..wow!

Everyone has commented on the mix, and I've got not much to add really... I think it was very well done, w/ all of the comments above noted.

BUT.... What really stood out to me, (no disrespect Chris, I think you're great), is the songwriting.... I think the song stands on its own VERY well. I even made my wife and 14 yr old girl come down to the studio to listen through the "Best Speakers in the House".

We all agree... there's a Hit there.... Capital "H".
Say, how is she at lip synching??? :)

She could easily replace this girl...Lip Syncing Demo

Shit.... I *NEVER* get tired of that one... :D :D :D

Nice. Real Nice. You know what it reminds me of? My band - We have this singer who's like the perfect star. Really HOT and she has a voice that takes your breath away. One problem we're still at school! Then songs we write are in our spare time and together we dont have much of it. I session (drums) and work part time in studios. And im only 15 so i have coursework and exams to worry about. Same as the other band. Anyway......... really nice track mate. I really like it. I always have problems mixing my own tracks though with that band because i'm used to rock bands with singers who cant sing. Now i have this great singer and i'm finding it really hard to sort out the tracks.
Only thing i'd suggest is bring the guitars up around the vox more, only slightly. Other than that, it's better than I've ever done by a long way mate. Great stuff. :)

Chris,

She is 14?

Shit, I quit.

Great, great stuff.
