I admit it! I love them! My Rap-Master, Casio VL-10, Sk-5, Sa-1, Kawasaki keysboards, all of them, I love them. I don't know why, they're just so much more fun than getting a couple of nice keyboards. I'd rather have my table of cheap toy keys.
...plus the Casios are fun to circuit-bend.

I hear ya, I've got a couple of old Yamahas with the small keys that are actual synths- you can change the sound parameters via some sliders. Those things were fun to record with many years ago when I had my first 4-track.
The hiss level was pretty atrocious but the sounds were not that bad. And those things can be found almost antwhere- garage sales, Goodwill, etc.

I tried some real cheap old modules - U-220, Proteus-1, Kawai K-10 - ecch. But others - Yamaha TQ-5 in particular - sound real good. And I've got a PSR-6 - 4 voice polyphony, LOL - that's waiting for the right opportunity to add some lo-fi goodness to some track somewhere.

Ok, I'm old

Hi,

Back in the sixties bands used the Farfisa keyboards giving rise to what I call the cheesy Farfisa sound. Think "96 Tears". Fortunately most keyboards still have an organ selection that sounds like that. I use it for the organ hook in my song "Houdini".

I was fortunate to know and play with Frank Frost before he passed on. He played guitar with Sonny Boy but when I knew him he played harp and keys. He was always showing up with some cheap Casio or Yamaha keyboard that he borrowed. Man he could make a cheap keyboard sing.

Thanks,

Hairy Larry

I just picked up a Casio SK8, missing the high Ab key, for $2.

Pretty soon I'm gonna start a cheap keyboard RUMBLE!, watch the mp3 clinic for details

If you don't own a pink Casio SK-1, then you're just a dilletante! :D

i have an obsession with keys too for some reason. i dont even play them that well..

i have a 76 key general midi keyboard, and i just bought an Axiom 49. i still want a microKorg and a that moog reissue. i'm also one to enjoy playing with the old casio CZ101/cz1000. and then of course, everytime i'm in a toy store, i cant help but to play some beethoven on a 13 key infant's EXPLORE! keyboard...

I had an old Farfisa, traded it for a motorcycle. The old Moog Concertmate I got at Radio Shack was pretty cool for it's time. Then there was the PAIA Synthesizer Kit I built in the seventies. My Minimoog Voyager is pretty cool, kinda mixing the new with the old, though not cheap by any means.

I remember my brother got some kinda psr (very old one) I had more fun playing it than my Roland VA76, that keyboard had so much pattern variations, Drum variation slider, bass var. slider, Accomp 1 slider etc.... and it was so fast at recording, almost like an Ensoniq.... oh, and i just remembered about 15 years (whe i was about 5) ago, my uncle had that psr withlong pitch bender and modulation underneath the keys it was so kool... makes me remember good old days...

thats it, I gotta get one of those kind, gotta do some research at wich PSR/PSS is the oldest and has the most BUTTONS and stuff...

We have an old PSR-6000 (I think) at college that looks downright evil. Top folds up like a Voyager or something. Never hooked it up - it might suck soundwise, but still, it looks like it has potential.

I love the old cheesy FM Yamaha's, like the MR-1 , and the cheaper DX's (i.e. DX-100). And I routinely record my kids toys (especially love it when they hardly work anymore, and have nearly dead batteries in them....for that real "Suffer The Children" effect....:D ).
