Hat STYLE. Not contents.
Sorry I haven't been giving any feedback the last few weeks. I'm just finishing up moving cross country. (I'm in Nashville now if any HR folks want to hang out.)

I need to get a new set of headphones for work before I can start giving people feedback again. In the mean time, anyone want to fill me in on what particularly cool songs I've missed?

Anyway, I've got this friend who does panels at anime conventions in the style of a late-night talk show.

I wrote him a theme song! It's instrumental.

I tried to go for a big, bombastic thing like The Daily Show or Colbert Report but with the ridiculous grunge and weird noises that I usually use.

As always, feedback is appreciated.

(In case you missed the link above: MP3.)

Steve,

It's just wacky enough to be a theme song. I hear clipping in a couple of places, but that may have been intentional ridiculous grunge. If so, never mind that comment. To me it would sound a lot better with a better bass sound. Don't know if it's a keyboard patch or what, but it sounds kind of farty, for lack of a better non-word. If this had a nice deep rich bass, I think it could sound pretty cool. The rest of it has a high pitched carnival type sound, with the exception of the guitars, so IMO it needs a solid bottom end.

It's not supposed to be clipping, per se. Any specific instances you can point out?

The bass is a mix between a fretless run through a Crate stage monitor, that same fretless DI, and a shortscale run through a Bassballs pedal. The Bassballs is probably the farty one. I may revisit that tone a little.

The timing is really rough in spots. I can hear everything that's going on, but the sounds themselves aren't that pleasing to me. That left fuzz guitar is awful. Lol. But it fits your style. Quirky and weird with a good underlying melody.

Ya know, I think this is one of your best mixes. Everything is audible, and has its own space. The sounds you're using seem to be intentionally lo-fi, which definitely has its place, even though I don't particularly like it. Timing gets pretty bad in spots. Once that is fixed, I think this suits you just fine! Thanks for sharing.

This is the first of your stuff I've heard. There are a lot of sounds that normaly I would say are 'wrong', but it seems all seems to work. I like it.

I just went back and listened again. I think it may just be a synth patch that sounds like clipped amp. Comes in at 0:05 both channels.

The drums seem really off at the beginning there. It pulls together better during the faster, denser parts.

I can't necessarily discern clipping from intentional distortion in this context, but definitely some weird fuzziness going on.

It's a good theme song though and overall one of you better mixes in my opinion.

Dang! I'd hoped the timing wouldn't be as pronounced as that.

The drums are actually on time at the start, but the rhythm guitar (which everything else was following) was a bit sketchy. Probably the problem is that this song is only 102 bpm. I just can't play that slowly! :D

I'm still waiting on feedback from the guy I recorded it for, but I'll try to revisit the mix tonight. (It may be turd polishing at this point unless I want to retrack* some stuff though.)

*As if I'm likely to do that!

I hear the timing problems. It's a little loose. The repetative guitar rhythm part does make it sound like it belongs to a game along with the synth part. Fix the timing and it's done.

Hi, everyone! Thanks for all the feedback.

I have 2 new mixes to inflict on you: Otaku Tonight Theme | Regdar and the Fighters The first ("2nd mix") is much the same as the first but with slightly different balance on the Abomination and some timing issues fixed.
The second ("Light mix") has most of the rhythm guitars removed and the cymbals added back in.

Dang! I'd hoped the timing wouldn't be as pronounced as that.

And it's the easiest, most obvious thing for non-musicians to notice. Even people with no musical knowledge can tell if timing and rhythm is off.
I'm like the others, I would not have thought to use those sounds, but it works and I can hear why it makes a theme song for the panel show.

Material wise -- just excellent. Yes, there are some timing issues, but nothing so blatant that it distracted from the listen. The mix itself is sonically harsh ... everything seems to have a bit of a midrange bite ... but if you can get everything to play along better with each other and remove the sonic sandpaper, IMO you'll be done.

Thanks, guys.

The guy who requested it is planning on getting his notes to me sometime after tomorrow. I'll probably revisit it again then.

I like it, its has a boppy melody combined with a quirky rythm I can see as working well for the purpose of a theme song. Good Job!

I really like this melody a lot. If you're going for theme song I think you nailed it. :)

I think a mix that's more-or-less exactly like the original but without so much distortion would be perfect. The light mix was better, in my opinion, but a bit too heavy on the drums I thought. Aside from that, the overall concept is great, the tune is catchy, and I really like what you're doing with the bass. It's a good song. :)

Thanks, PDP and dynis.

Too heavy on the drums, huh? I don't think I've ever managed to have that problem before!

the light mix is the best, the fuzz took too much out the tune in the other mixes...the timing seems better but its still loose.....your stuffs quite normal-fi anyway so it doesn't detract from its quirkiness

I feel like you're coming up with a new synonym for "medium-fi" for every new song I post, KC.

:D
