Hey everyone.. I have an alternative rock band that consists of 2 guitars, bass, drums, little keyboard and vocals.. I have a good computer witha good soundcard.. my question is.. what are the basics I need to record all of them together at home on this computer.. I hear cakewalk and cubase is good.. but what else do I need?

Thanks!

TK

by "good soundcard" what do you mean?...your gonna need a soundcard w/ as many inputs you think your gonna need..i would say atleast 4 inputs for micing a drum set....personally id go with 8 analog ins..minimum.
Plus theres mics your gonna need and good pre's...do some reading in these forums.Itll help you out tremendously

These supposedly work well and come with Cubase LE, so all you'd need to add are microphones, cables and stands to make a basic demo.

That would be fine if you plan on getting the mix right the first time, but, from the way I read it, that board outputs only the main mix to the computer. Just starting out it would be cool, but if you're not on a budget constraint I would splurge for something that has (as previous poster suggested) at least 8 inputs. I just bought an Edirol UA-1000 and I love it!.

Cakewalk is pretty good but if you are new to recording, it can be frustrating, remembering to arm tracks and such. Don't be fooled by a fast talking salesperson, there ARE lots better soundcards than Sound Blaster Live!!! Figure out what you want to be able to do then seek out the products which will allow you to do it. When you hit a problem come back and post a question about it, this is the best place on the web to get answers form people with experience in all phases of music and recording.
