I'm looking for a mic that isn't accurate

I'm looking for a new mic for vocals. I've come to realize I don't like neutral mics on my voice. I'm currently using a v67, which is ok, but a tad dark, but easily beaten by my new aquired Rode NT2 ($100 off craigslist!). I like the presence of the NT2, it really compliments my voice, but am still trying to try out different mics. I'm going to be trying out a tube mic or two (hopefully Rode NTK), and hopefully a Studio Projects C1.

I have a very clean/flat preamp that I love very much (DAV BG1) and I think I'm done trying to find a neutral mic that makes my voice sound the way I want it to. Can anyone recommend any specific mics that are considerably colored (perhaps a tube LDC) and/or considerably bright/present? I'm ALWAYS having to boost a few dB's around 3-6kHz to get the presence I am looking for for vocals; I'd rather get a bright mic and have to eq less. Perhaps I should try out the C1?

I thought I remembered seeing you talk about having an fmr rnp. Did you swap it for the DAV? Or am I confusing you with someone else?

try the good old SM 7... not flat but so gooooooooood!!!!

oh, and I've heard that the B.L.U.E. baby bottle is wonderful and colorful!

The C1 is definitely bright and has a fair amount of color to it.

a mic that can be had on the bay for about 600 is a neumann tlm103 - it's not quite as bright, and not quite as colored but still really good

a 414 is pretty bright (maybe moreso than the C1) and but not harsh or thin sounding like some AT mics can be. but it probably sits right in the middle of being transparent and colored.

Yea, but he said he wants something brighter than an NT-2, which doesn't bring either of those mics to mind at all.

From the sounds of what Antispatula is trying to describe ... there are two that come to mind: Blue Dragonfly (kind of an oddball, but it could be just the ticket), and/or a Rode NTK. In particular, I would audition the NTK. Bright ... colored ... not accurate. Yea, I'd definitely look at that one first.

BLUE Blueberry, Mouse and Kiwi mics all are bright without being "spitty" or harsh in the high end. All can still be found much cheaper than the regular street price (half price or cheaper in some cases) in the wake of the whole Tenex changeover.

I sold it immediately after I got the BG1. No comparison.

I had an akg 414 xls for a short period of time, and was very unimpressed with it in relation to it's pricetag, and didn't find it that bright. Perhaps you're thinking of the TL-II? I think the TL-II has a presence boost specifically to help vocals cut through a mix. I probably should have gotten that instead of the XLS which is pretty flat.

I'll look into the BLUE mics, but the bluebird (so sexy) and the baby blue bottle are the only ones in my pricerange. I'll look into the neumann tlm103 too.

Yo Antispatula! It's not for everyone, but exactly what you asked for- AKG Solid Tube. It started out as an overated $1000 mic, then worked its way down to a $500 underated mic. Now its working its way back up. I traded mine for a mic I needed more at the time, but I would really like to get another.-Richie
