Hey, you should check out the newest undertaking:

'Association Of Independent Recording Artists'

http://www.aoira.com

Mention it on the show if you get a chance!

I registered yesterday but never received an email with my password. About how long should it take?

BTW: I registered with my real name, DennisRester.

Thanks
Dennis

Should be almost instant, unless you mis-typed your password or something.

Try the 'forgot password' feature, and if that doesn't work, e-mail me.

Dave Baker: again, I remind you that the purpose of this forum, stated many times by many people, is pretty much strictly limited to discussions about mp3s we've put together.

This ain't personal, and I wish you every success with your show. But you're spamming the wrong place.

And as for anyone who would like to disagree with me, please feel free to turn this thread into a discussion (yet another one) about the purpose of this forum. I invite it.

I agree that this forum is for sharing mp3's, and i think that the homeboy(Dave) is trying to help people share their mp3's......yeah, if you get technical, this belongs in another forum, but in order to reach the people that would most benefit from what he is offering, this is the place.....he isnt selling anything, he's trying to help people.......

it is not spam.....nowhere near spam.......if it was, Id be the first one hollering and Im sure all will agree:D

Dobro, have you ever started a thread in the Clinic that didnt have a mp3?.....i think so......

that doesnt mean that i want to see the Clinic flooded with non mp3 threads, but every now and then, one just happens to fit......

my 2 cents......

Dave has proven to be honest about his intentions. Im not into the color of the law so to speak. In other words why throw the baby out with the bathwater.Besides rules were made to be broken on special occasions. I heard one of Jamal's songs on his show among others. I will submit Dave a tune......

i came in hoping you were one of the Jazz professors at my school, "David Baker"...

Really? A bit beside the point. He may be helping people, but don't kid yourself, he is selling something. His intentions may very well be honest, but using this site as a means to advertise worldtalk is in poor taste. This applies to Waldo's ventures that are advertised on this bbs as well. This site shouldn't be a free advertising board for anyone or any company out there. I can't say as I blame Waldo or WorldTalkRadio for taking advantage of this opportunity, since the owner of homerecording.com doesn't appear to object.

This, 'change of attitude' towards spam is disheartening. The internet becomes more of a rolling advertisment everyday, as people become more complacent and ignore the rules.

Not spam??? Gidge, what's happening?? He's advertising his site which is not a charity (even if it was).

These guys are working for free?

Dobro, have you ever started a thread in the Clinic that didnt have a mp3?.....i think so......

You're missing the point. Dobro isn't a corporation with xx employees. He's a guy with an acoustic guitar (or classical, whatever :) ), recording music for his reasons.

that doesnt mean that i want to see the Clinic flooded with non mp3 threads, but every now and then, one just happens to fit......

Like a square block in a round hole.

ok, let me simplify my message.......

he's playing our songs for free and isnt trying to sell anything HERE.......

my opinion only......anyways, we have moderators (cough, cough, giggle) to decide what belongs and what doesnt.......

Then I'd Rule

I'll be yer knucklehead !

Thanks for playing The Ghost of FM and my collaboration ...

Hey YOU RULE ! :D

Dave,

Thanks for playing the song!

Last one on the show and in its entirety with no bleeps on the nasty words.

Very cool!

Studio & I are humbled.

Thanks again.

If you chase two rabbits, they both get away

Love the discussion.
Like you guys a lot.
I think Dave has a nice show.

But I don't post here to be seen.
We all have PM service availabale and some of us allow emails to be sent to us from interested parties.

MY OPINION is that any entreprenurial soul can send us an email or PM and say, "Heard your stuff, would like to use some of it, are you interested?" Posting an "ad" here is like the lazy way to go about finding new talent. And it's and AD. Flame me all you want - you're missing the point IMHO.

On the same front page as this post with almost 500 'reads' and 30 replies are several MUSICAL ITEMS requesting feedback and assistance. Many of them have far fewer 'reads' and way far fewer replies - and they were posted here for the 'clinic.

The first rabbit got away.

If I go to the doctor's office or the medical 'clinic' because I need some assistance - I may very well engage others in the waiting room in a conversation about politics, about the weather, or about which toothpaste I should use - I may learn something new, I may get pissed off, I might make a friend.....

But it didn't make me better.

And there goes the second rabbit.

Ciao

Hunh..

And all this time I thought it was "a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush".

Isn't Dave's show just another channel for people to get their music heard?

You guys post stuff on Nowehereradio or wherever and invite people to listen to it. So what's the difference?

There are two differences:

We don't advertise our stuff here. It's agreed.

Dave Baker isn't using this forum for its intended purpose, which is to discuss our mixes using internet mp3s as the medium.

If you're concerned, like I am, about keeping this board as free of advertising as possible, then you'll understand my blowing the whistle. If you don't share my concerns, then not only will you wonder why people like me are complaining, but you'll probably also wish I'd stop making all the noise with the whistle...

I emailed Dave privately and asked him to justify his advertising here. I expect the reason he hasn't got back to me yet has got something to do with the fact that he knows he shouldn't be advertising here.

Finally, he seems to be offering a useful and valuable service. Like I said to him earlier in this thread, I wish him well, and I mean that - I think it's cool to have your mp3s played for others to hear them. But I don't want to see his ads here.

I won't flame you. In fact I've pointed that out to Dave before and he apparently ignored the suggestion. It would be in his own self interest. Oh well. Dave, let other people promote your stuff. It's called publicity. It works.

Also - I personally wouldn't mind the spam if Dave became a contributing member of this board by downloading people's songs and critiquing them.

But if I recall, his last post was blantantly labled "spam" and the tone of it was pretty snide towards those of us who, for the most part, politely asked him not to spam. Not cool.

I think that anyone saying 'what the board is intended to be' is setting themselves up as arbiter of the values of this place. The board is whatever anyone thinks it should be. These long posts complaining about one line of spam take up far more space than the original post and really, they also are not 'what the board is supposed to be about'. I don't like reading spam but I also don't like long-ass repetitive declarations of what someone thinks I should believe. But you know how I handle it? I don't read them. There's a bazillion posts on this place and I'm not gonna read them all.

In Dave's case.......he really is fairly low keyed about it and does provide some small amount of benefit for some of the guys here.
I agree that he could PM people if he's heard their stuff and would like to play it. But, IMO, he doesn't intrude enough for this to turn into a big drawn out fight. If he was flooding us with spam it would be different but he's not so for me, it doesn't rise to the level of being annoying.
Far more annoying to me are the frequent vicious trolls that come in here..........but I just ignore those guys too. Life isn't perfect.........what a surprise! :)

Heh. Listen, if this place had any reliable structure to it, this thread would have been moved or deleted. Dave would have been contacted and given explicit instructions as to what is allowed and what is not allowed. In the end, Dave would still get music, people would still know about Dave, and the spam-free status of the site would remain intact, predictable, and just.

However, there is no structure, so every time something is out of line we have to have this same exact retarded moral debate. It certainly wore me out. The only moderating I do now is fucking with FT because I find it personally amusing to give him a taste of his own medicine...oh and I got rid of that guy in the keyboard forum because I just couldn't stand to see that. Other than that though, these things will always end up this way.

A few things I've learned:

1) You can't blame the people who stand up for the "big name" spammer, because usually the spammer is someone who can potentially offer them a valuable product or service. Even if the chance is 1 in a million, you can't blame a guy for trying to get onto his good side. You're an amature in the mic forum and suddenly the president of mic company X shows up...how do you react? It really is perfectly understandable. Or you have a guy who is the VP of a web radio station coming into the MP3 forum, where everybody at some level really wants to be heard. I was contacted a while back from a couple different real but very small radio stations in pretty remote areas, but man, it felt totally cool. So I completely understand why the users of the BBS would be willing to overlook some of the "rules" (which are just wishes) for this guy.

2) Without rules to uphold, rules cannot be upheld. I looked for the rules of the BBS that we've been referring to for ages, and they don't exist. We simply made them up as we went....it was easier back when Dragon was here, but only a few of us were around to remember that. And in case you don't, even people pushing non profit, non competing services were silenced by Dragon (someone that most people here love and respect in fact!).

It is those reasons, primarily, that make this place impossible to moderate by anyone but Dragon (who does still do moderation around here when people report threads BTW). I learned that no matter how logical it seems that something shouldn't be allowed, it'll always be easy to challenge.

So, my final point is, we can beat this to a pulp with discussion and it'll just annoy people. Your best chance at results is to use the "report thread to moderator" link which sends it directly to Dragon....who quietly takes care of or ignores the situation.

Exactally!!...Well said...:)

Hmm. Slack seems to be saying that since there's no Daddy figure to enforce the "rules", there's no point in the rest of us even discussing potential rules/guidelines, etc.

I'd have to disagree. I think this whole Dave thing pretty much has shown that it WORKS to discuss things.

I think it's now pretty clear that the majority, for whatever reason, think it's OK for Dave to post stuff about his show. It's pretty clear because we took the time to DISCUSS it.

When there's no moderator you gotta accept that unless pretty much 100% of the group agrees on banning something, than it/he is not going to be banned.

It's obvious to me that, whether they're the "majority" or not, enough people want Dave around that we're never gonna come to a group concensus on this one.

As much as I agree with Dobro's point of view, I'd have to say there isn't much point in pushing the issue further.

So let's just let it go.
