Heh. Listen, if this place had any reliable structure to it, this thread would have been moved or deleted. Dave would have been contacted and given explicit instructions as to what is allowed and what is not allowed. In the end, Dave would still get music, people would still know about Dave, and the spam-free status of the site would remain intact, predictable, and just.
However, there is no structure, so every time something is out of line we have to have this same exact retarded moral debate. It certainly wore me out. The only moderating I do now is fucking with FT because I find it personally amusing to give him a taste of his own medicine...oh and I got rid of that guy in the keyboard forum because I just couldn't stand to see that. Other than that though, these things will always end up this way.
A few things I've learned:
1) You can't blame the people who stand up for the "big name" spammer, because usually the spammer is someone who can potentially offer them a valuable product or service. Even if the chance is 1 in a million, you can't blame a guy for trying to get onto his good side. You're an amature in the mic forum and suddenly the president of mic company X shows up...how do you react? It really is perfectly understandable. Or you have a guy who is the VP of a web radio station coming into the MP3 forum, where everybody at some level really wants to be heard. I was contacted a while back from a couple different real but very small radio stations in pretty remote areas, but man, it felt totally cool. So I completely understand why the users of the BBS would be willing to overlook some of the "rules" (which are just wishes) for this guy.
2) Without rules to uphold, rules cannot be upheld. I looked for the rules of the BBS that we've been referring to for ages, and they don't exist. We simply made them up as we went....it was easier back when Dragon was here, but only a few of us were around to remember that. And in case you don't, even people pushing non profit, non competing services were silenced by Dragon (someone that most people here love and respect in fact!).
It is those reasons, primarily, that make this place impossible to moderate by anyone but Dragon (who does still do moderation around here when people report threads BTW). I learned that no matter how logical it seems that something shouldn't be allowed, it'll always be easy to challenge.
So, my final point is, we can beat this to a pulp with discussion and it'll just annoy people. Your best chance at results is to use the "report thread to moderator" link which sends it directly to Dragon....who quietly takes care of or ignores the situation.
