well folks, Im about to get bashed, YELLED AT IN CAPS, threatend, and cussed out. I have been reading this forum for a long time. I havent started recording yet because im still saving money and researching gear. So, keep in mind im still green. I hear a lot of people talking about how homerecording gear can produce top quality near pro sound and such.. you've heard it before. People talk about 800 dollar preamps 1000 dollar mics and how to get that professional snare sound. After listening to dozens of songs on the mixing clinic I have grown a little disapointed and sceptical. Why, you may ask? Well because I think it sucks! Everything I have heard on the mixing clinic just plain sucks. The musical ideas can be good sometimes but the sonic quality is so amature. The most obvious thing is the drums. The percussion gives it away imediately. Lots of people post replies and say things like, "nice song man the drums really rocked." What?! What are you talking about the drums sucked. Mabey im just an idiot. Perhaps what im listening on makes the songs sound poor or mabey its the lo fi mp3. But really I havent heard anything even close to pro sound. When I say pro sound I mean something that doesnt sound like it was recorded in the bathroom. I would call pro sound something that would possibly trick me into believing that this was actually the radio playing. Anyway, hundreds of people are always talking about recording techinques, gear to buy, mixing tips, mic applications, thousand of dollars spent ect. ect. After all that one would expect the music produced in home studios to be fantastic. Ok, Ok some things on the mix clinic are really good but 98% of it sucks. When I listen to the mixing clinic I automatically think it sounds like amature crap. It sounds like the type of thing one could do with a cassette multitrack in the closet. ok so go ahead and bash me for expressing my opinion, I guess I deserve it for not pretending to believe that what I hear on the mixing clinic doesnt suck.

I can guarantee that few of the recordings done here are on preamps over $500 and most are on $200 or less versions.

Most of the mics used here are $300 and less with most being under $100.

This may account for the sound you are hearing.

Is a pro sound possible for under a grand? Yes, but you would have to have the following to make it work:

A very experienced mixing engineer, a skilled producer, a professional mastering engineer. Then you could do it.

Most of us are musicians or engineers and can only do one or two things well. Most of us do this along with a day job and so the opportunity to have a live drummer is nil. So, we use drum machines and soundfonts to build our musical ideas. That's why the drums sound like they do. Sounds like your a drummer and you resent hearing subpar, non-live drums. Can't blame you really.

Some of the best stuff I have heard here is from guys who only mix music. They focus on one thing, getting a good sound. They don't worry about song structure, playing or singing which many of the posters here have to. So, most of the music is going to be experimental, imperfect, and sometimes done quickly with soundfonts or drum machines to build an idea.

So should you invest in sub $1000 gear? I would say if you are just learning, yeah. If you are trying to learn to mix, yeah. If you are trying to get better as a musician, yeah. If you have a lot of money, No.

If you are already musically experienced or engineer-wise savy then get the better stuff cause you know better and the low cost stuff won't keep you satisfied.

theres a few things on here that were done pretty good. That metalhead guy I was arguing with on the " what do real engineers think of home recording" thread, his was GREAT!

No I dont even think well give you the satisfaction of being banned. That is what you want isnt it? Well pretend to agree with you for the time being and hope that you quietly go away. That would be much more satisfying for us...

hey bro, this is home recording bbs,not pro recording bbs.you are correct on some of what you say though.but only some.
the drum thing is dead on.(i am guilty myself)but i have seen some very talented folks here.i often wonder why bsabbath and jamal bucket are not on the radio.they are both good musicians,
and they get some of the best sounds i have heard here.
to me,it seems that most pro music is overly compressed(to
the point of distortion)and suffers a severe lack of dynamics, which
can be directly attributed to over compression.
everyone here does what they love!everyone on radio does
what they are told!

Are you listening to the songs on Lo-fi?

Every song sounds like shit on lo fi streams.I can upload a wav file straight off a commercial album right now and it will sound like shit on lo fi.

In general I'd agree with you. Do a search for the tunes by Macle if you haven't heard them. His shit was pretty tight.

I'll second that! Macles' stuff sounds as good as most of the pro stuff I hear these days and better than some.

I kinda agree with you johnston about some of what you say you are hearing. Surely mine sucks, the drums too. But the real catch is.... I get better every damned time I record something. It happens because I learn from these guys, I listen to what I`ve done prior to this and correct, I try new ideas, I listen to what they`ve done, I listen to my Atlantic, Capitol, MCA, and many other record labels on vinyl, CD, and the radio. There`s one super hell of a difference in Thinking and Doing. The task is to try and get to the point where there's little effort involved going from one to the other. Thats what most of us are here trying to develop the skill to do, even if in varying degrees of expection and commitment to the task. There is no "pretending" as you say, its damn hard work, pleasure, disappointment, joy, humbling moments, bubbling personal pride, support, and a common respect for each other's efforts.
Perhaps you`ll jump in and try it out, surely it isnt instant death, cause we are all in here swimming and doing fine, having a blast.... Or you can stand on the side of the pool and wonder....
Or wait until there is a billion dollar studio somewhere jumping to afford its time, personel, and amentities to record your first take and it be an instant platinum, all to avoid embarrassment of it not being perfect.
there now..

Turn on the radio...I was just on. LOL. Oh, but I didn't use drums, so maybe it doesn't count.

My recordings may suck, but you just haven't listened to enough if can't hear the greatness in the recordings of:

Al Carmichael ("crawdad")
Tom Gagne ("Sluice"); or
Chris Harris ("I'm Kidding Here")

MAYBE???? Jesus, tell me I'm not reading that correctly. Surely you mean that a 128kbps mp3 IS lofi, right? I mean...RIGHT????

Now, if you haven't taken the time to download a song, lol...yeah, I'd agree with you...those drums are gonna' sound a tad on the thin side, lmao.

What exactly are you listening on?What kind of speakers and what bitrate of Mp3?

Damn you Kramer for raising my blood pressure...God knows I'm almost bled out as it is, lmao.

I guess the guy's asleep, but Im seriously dieing to know how he's listening. I listen to a TON of radio and commercial stuff, and the gap is definitely narrowing....

unless you're streaming on lofi, lol.
