I'm going to sell my AKG's and replace them by SP's

Yep, yesterday I recorded a jazzband and I used the B1 on upright bass. It sounds pretty good and balanced.

It was the first time I used the B1 for this, I've recorded uprights, which are a PITA when recording a band together, with tube Neumanns, ribbons, all kind of SD condensers and I've tried SM57's, which even doesn't sound bad on upright, and C1000 and C3000's which both suck.

In the Netherlands a used C1000 is going for between 100 and 125 euro and a C3000 for some 200.

So I'm getting rid of the C1000's and 3000's and I'm gonna get a couple of B1 and C1's

Good idea or bad?
 
so you come from the netherlands right ? any idea where i can get sp mic's around the border? I live in belgium and it looks like they're not available around here. So i thaught i'd make trip to the netherlands.

Wise choice, I sold my C1000's on ebay and used the money towards (2) SP C1's and a M-Audio Luna.

I couldn't have made a better choice. The C1's are a supreme upgrade as overheads, and the luna is the best new mic out right now, for vocals at least. Soon people will hear it and be amazed at the quality it puts out, and especially for the price!

Humm, I guess if that's what you want to do... If it was me, I'd replace those AKG C1000's with a pair of Josephson C42's and the AKG C3000 with a Shure KSM44.

EDIT: On second thought... keep the AKG C1000S's for drums, and add the Josephson C42's to your mic locker too.

Good choice. I too own some SP B1s and are constantly amazed at how good they sound, especially for their low cost. :)

IMO... its a good idea. But if you had the money...the C42 matched pair with th4e KSM44 would be better Like DJL suggested though I think the C1000's should be avoided for any mic'ing you want to do. You could try sticking a condom over the C1000's :)

I think sometimes the AKG C1000S can be a good tom-tom mic choice.
 
Actually the C1000 can sound pretty good on some distorted guitars and some woodwinds. They also can sound decent on a bass amp with a small speaker like the Hartke kickback.

But....compared to what's available these days, the C1000 and C3000 are way too expensive IMHO.

The C3000's are very harsh and I only use them as spot mics on hi hat and ride cymbals. And in most recordings the hi hat track isn't used in the mix.

So, if one sells a C3000, one can buy two B1's. And they look better and sound better.
 
Any time you get rid of C1000's and C3000's, chances are you are improving your sound. Even if all you get in return is a tunafish sandwich.

So what kind of tuna would you recommend for close-micing a Djembe ?

I have two B1s and use them for acoustic guitars, mainly. I couldn't be happier with the sound, especially for the price.
The lack of a brittle/harsh high end is particularly pleasing.

Today, my dear fellows, I used the B1 on a Marshall stack and again it sounded super. Warm and clear. We tried a couple of mics like the 57, the 421 and 441, but the guitarist has chosen for the sound of the B1.

They have just left the studio and again the guitarist said how much he liked the sound.

Strange, a $79 B1 gets chosen over a $750 Sennheiser.

I have a bid of 300 euro ($357) for the two C3000's.

Would you pay $1000 for a B1 if that's what they cost or would you buy a better mic?
