I'm getting a distorted sound when I mic my amp . Help!

--I have a Marshall valvestate amp and I use a Shure-57. When I turn up the distortion and volume on the amp, the track sounds like it's getting signal overload, but on the other hand it's not because I am constantly checking the level and it's at 0-3 decibels. I run the Shure into the ART MP preamp into the line of my Tascam 414 mkII.

--What's going on here? Any suggestions?

Use a sound level meter to make sure you're not overloading the SPL rating of the mic....
