Looking great, rush!!

I have a question for you guys, rush, frederic & Michael: each time I record vocals the singer complains that he/she can't see the arrangement on the computer screen. They said it would be much nicer if they could see the "arrangement window" in Logic (where all the individual tracks are color-coded), for example so they know what's coming up in the song. Does that make sense to you? Do you plan on having a little flat-panel monitor in the ISO booth that is hooked up to the DAW? I will start building my own studio next summer and I consider doing that ... whadayathink?
Normally, I'd give them an 8 count click cue, with the last 2 beats silent, that they could hear through the headphones. If its their song, and they wrote it, and they're well rehearsed, other parts comming in and out shouldn't be a problem.

If you want to run CAT5 through your studio, you could have a monitor in the vocal booth. I don't think its a bad idea, and if it helps the client, then go for it!

I'm running CAT5 through out my studio, so that if I'm ever recording alone, I can control the DAW from any room.

Good ideas with tracking from the booth. Never thought about that before.

BTW: I decided to have a big[/i] fish tank between the control and tracking rooms, in addition to a window. Looking through a fish tank is amazing and it creates a unique atmosphere.

For now on I'm going to call you "Distraction Boy" :D

I'm on the line with this one! I think it's a good idea in general but not as a "crutch"! If a singer is relying on watching the screen for his/her Q's, that's not a good sign. I can see it being useful if the screen displayed the lyrics as a reference but watching the bar or waveform while recording is nuts!

How much farther removed can one be from the material then that? That's like me saying when I record my drums, I want to set up a string next to my cymbals to make sure none of them sway up and down more than 2' per hit! If that's what I concentrated on, I might as well have just used a drum machine.

A place I see it being useful is for doing overdubs. You could use it as a starting reference but only if really needed.

As Neil Peart say's, "Get on with the fascination, the REAL RELATION........."

I just told you what some of my vocalists asked for: that they would like to see the screen so they know for instance when a break is coming up so they don't mess up.

OK OK, I better shut up. No more computer screens and fish tanks for you guys ;)

Naaaaah, whatever works for you works for you. Its something *I* wouldn't do, but that doesn't mean anything more than *I* wouldn't do it.

You can paint your studio walls flourescent green if that floats your boat, no one is stopping you :)
