So I haven't posted here in God knows how long.

But my band just finished up our single for our new EP.

Here's the mix:

Here's our myspace, which includes a video of bananas, sharks, and smacking: www.myspace.com/skylinerushmi

Tell me what you think! We're going to be fixing things up for this song, and others, before we release them all together in the EP so every bit of advice will be taken into consideration.

I am very impressed with the vocal, and your overall choice of melody, bass, and chords. very nice. like the choices perhaps fall out boy should be making.

that said. i can't get into the gabber/happy hardcore or whatever beat that is. i'm a big fan of prodigy, nails, linkin park, armin and deadmau5 to name a few, and not saying that you should try to sound like anyone else i just think you should be slowing this down to a level that you won't be limiting yourself to the musical fringe just because of the bpm.

as far as the recording, it sounds a little flat on the eq, i would give it a nice little notch up in the 50 to 200 region, and then i would taper off the highs ever so slightly. (a natural curve most prefer)

my .02

Thank you for the advice. Ironically I boosted the high end 2 or 3 db in mastering for some more presence, but I guess it was too much haha.

But could you elaborate more with the bpm? I'm very interested in what you have to say, but I was a little confused when I read that haha.

we as human beings gravitate toward certain things naturally. we also shy away from certain things.

same can be said about our hearing / listening. we naturally prefer to hear a womans voice over a mans, because we naturally prefer a certain frequency range over another. by the same token, we naturally react a certain way to bpm, and it is because of what our natural heart rate. ever been walking down the street, and heard a song you actually were really listening too, and found yourself changing your stride, or feeling out of step with the music? we naturally try to adjust to the rhythm around us. that's why there is great energy (potentially) in the bpm selection. this is especially a big deal with a dj, who must recognize the bpm for mixing, but also must recognize that sometimes you can go up in bpm and down in energy.

here's the problem. if the bpm goes too fast for the material, you lose the natural energy associated with it. very few tracks can pull off 150 range. where the music actually goes with the bpm that high.

take ruby soho and slow it down and you have an oddly slow sounding track. take your track and slow it down, and you have a winner. i stretched your song out, and to me it was way more natural, and conducive to grooving to. sounded absolutely ready for the radio. in fact, i would suggest that if you entered it in the monthly original contest i host, it would kill, simply slowed down. but if you kept it as is, it would be liked but by a few. again not saying we should worry about making everybody happy, i just think you have a top track here, just take the pitch wheel and crank it to the left. :)

IMO

Hmm so you think we should have a lower pitch as well or just the time stretch??

This is something I would love to experiment with.

Our songs are usually 140, one of them is 160, but for live shows the 140 feels wayyyyy too slow, which is why we put this song at 153 bpm.

I will try things out. Thank you for your advice.

yeah, don't pitch anything. just time stretch.

and if this 140-160 is your deal, don't change it if you like it and your groupies are throwing panties and all that. just a suggestion.

but i'm betting there will be more panties 10 bpm slower :)

it's like if you're waving your fist in the air with music. you can only speed things up so much before your powerful fist waving begins to resemble a much more masterbatory action.

This is actually a genre I'm usually pretty fond of (Enter Shikari, I Set My Friends on Fire, etc.) So I'm starting off on your side with this one!

That said there are a few issues. The vocals got buried in the mix a few times. (generally the chorus)

I'm also not a huge fan of the auto-tune. It's an overdone effect. The vocals sound like they're close enough that you don't need the drastic T-pain effect. (Alternately, if you insist on having some kind of effect on the vox, experiment a little. Try something new.)

The drums were usually too quiet as well. During the chorus, I really had to listen to hear them, and then I could only hear the one crash on the right and the synth "kick."

I like the big wind-down before the keychange, but I heard a loud click in the middle of it. (3:14.6)

The key change is also cool. That was once an overdone effect (Darn you, '80s arena rock!), but not the occasional key change sounds really good.

Hahahahaha drats! I was just waiting for someone to notice the click! lol

But thanks for the comments. The vocals were 'purposely' buried slightly in the chorus because our vocalist begged to not be heard so 'clearly' in the chorus...yeah.. weird i know.

We are a pop/electronica band so the auto-tune is kinda our thing haha. it is slightly overdone though, i noticed it as well.

these will all be taken into consideration when re-doing and fixing up a lot of the stuff for our EP release!

thank you!!
