Don't stare at the eye.
Can't resist a deal on eBay. And I mean deal--I like to go for the risky ones, may need work (may not work!) but may save some $$. Anyway I just snagged a set of 3 Sennheiser MD421's for $97.67

They look rough! And the risky part? Sold w/o testing, as-is. So maybe I just pissed away $100--or maybe I just scored big time.

We shall see.

A sneak peek:

Good luck indeed. Man, those babies look BEAT! Hopefully they'll sound OK though.

I know these are supposed to sound great on toms, so I'd love it if all three work. But even if I have to cannibalize 'em to end up w/one or two working, it'd still be a bargain--and another flavor for guitar cabs. Some folks just swear by these--and I've never used 'em.

Or you can re-sell them on eBay as "extreme war zone mikes - Eisenhower himself announced the WW2 victory thru them!" and earn even more $$$

With all seriousness though, good luck with your bid - hope it's a good bargain ;)

They'll definitely get the 'mojo' into your recordings!

Yeah, I'd say they were used for drums and the drummer wasn't very discriminating about what he or she hit. It is still a current mic, so it might be worthwhile to price replacement screens. The rest of the body could be stripped and repainted. Did you get clips with these -- although that is probably too much to ask? Great mic, the clips suck though.

Yeah, I'm a tinkerer--so I'll definitely try to rehabilitate their appearance. I had already thought of stripping & repainting them. I was going try my hand at removing the screens and "re-sculpting" them, but I hadn't thought about replacements. Good tip.

And nope, no clips. But from what I hear, that's not much of a loss.

Yeah, if you know anyone in the biz, they may be able to get them for you at some version of dealer cost. My local guitar shop will order stuff for me on that basis, even if it isn't something they normally carry. They don't do any pro audio, but they get the catalogs and a discount, even if they aren't a regular dealer. Worth checking out. I just got a Sony C38b I'm going to try to rehab on that basis. Needs a new screen. Damn USPS.

Road mics

Hi,

Yep, they look like road mics to me. I admire your courage. I usually go for a guaranteed not DOA as a minimum but you can still get a bad mic that way, not DOA, but not sounding right. Mostly the bargains make up for the clunkers.

I do have a great sounding RE10 that looks like it was run over by a truck.

I was gonna say if all three work and you only need two I'll give you $33 for one of them.

Joke!

Thanks,

Hairy Larry

Road mics! I love that phrase. That gives me an idea: even if they don't work, I'll put 'em in a plexiglass case with a placard explaining how Foghat used them to mic toms while on tour in the seventies. The worst of them will be described as "damaged by Lonesome Dave in a flying fury of lonesomeness."

Yes, a definite plan...

Now THESE are some mics that have been through a "shootout!"

...actually, a shootout of these mics would be a hoot. Come on, do it!

You betcha! I'll record some tracks along side some of my other cab mics? Any requests? (From among the "usual suspects" of cab mics)

The theme from "Gunsmoke". Oh, for mics? SM57, I5, SM7x, and if you have a ribbon, that would be nice, too. You also have one of those older Shure 57-ish mics, too, right? I got one, but haven't used it yet, but I'd still like to hear it.

Yep. I've got all those including the older 57-ish mic (the 545 SD). Don't have a royer, but do have a knock off ribbon from the group buy. Also have a e609, so yeah, I'll do a new shootout and include an MD 421. Just as soon as I know one of em's working!

At worst, you could probably make one good one out of the parts from all three. At best, you just saved $800!

Update:

Got the package. And glory be--there's guts in every one of 'em. No empty shells. I know that sounds silly. But at $99 for 3 of em, esp. with "as-is" that was at least a possibility!

I'll plug 'em in tonight and see what they sound like (if anything )
