Another Update:

Right out of the box, 2 out of three work perfectly. Here's the down and dirty proof--no tweaking, playing with placement, etc (that's to come!). Just slapped the mic in front of the amp and wanked a bit:

Now let's hope I can use the working mics as exemplars to help me determine what's wrong with the broken one.

But even if I don't get that working, I still got two MD421's for under $100. I'm okay with that.

No way. Duct tape fixes all. The broken one is held together with electrical tape! (The middle one in the above pics.)

Nope. Complete and utter silence. Like this:

Wife: What's in the box?
Me: 3 new mics. Well, 3 old mics.
Wife: Why? Don't you have enough mics?
Me: Well yeah, but not this particular model.
Wife: Gawd, those are beat up. Do they work?
Me: I don't know.
Wife: (This is the silence of the broken mic.)
