I'd like to think I'm getting the hang of this...

Dude, this sounds awesome:P Technically and musically. Can I ask what sort of equipement you used for the song Four Year Debt? It sounds so clean and tight.

John

I only listened to The Ship (Four Year Debt wouldn't download. I don't think it's broken, I think the server was just haveing problems)

Sounds pretty good. I like the balance of bass, and your guitar and vocal tones are pretty good. Some more reverb on the drums might help, but it's probably not neccessary.

I'm not a fan of the hard-panned guitar at the beginning. That's one of my personal pet peeves with mixing. I figure if it's important enough to include in the song, it should be important enough to pan at least a little bit to both ears.

I like the interlude with the organ. It sounds really good both in terms of mix and song flow/structure.

Thanks, guys! I agree about the hard panning, it's really a matter of taste, I suppose. I tend to listen to a lot of hard panned guitars so I kinda just naturally do it to everyone else unless they object.

Here's exactly what I used:

Alesis IO26 into Reaper on an old Dell crap computer

Audix Fusion 6 drum mic pack, with the overheads as far from each other as I could get them

57 on the snare

Sterling ST51 on the ride and vocals

(Very Nice!) Swamp ash Tele into a little 15w tube amp my Dad built out of an old Kalamazoo combo enclosure, into a homemade cab with 2 Eminence 10's.

Bass was direct into the IO26.

The "shaker" was a box of noodles and a bottle of water

The organ was some consumer digital piano with an organ setting into a Digitech pedal doing a fake mono Leslie sounds into the little guitar amp driven hard.

No compression anywhere, I'm so proud of myself!

Drumagog mixed about 50/50 on the kick, with Pipeline's kick .gog file.

i agree panning is a matter of taste, but i'd tighten up the doubled vocal tracks on 4 year debt. like -30 & 30. just my opinion.

I can't get either of the files to work -- I just get the web page with info about the file -- do you have to log in there?

Really like this...I'm listening to Four Year Debt.
a bit Ramones, a bit Cars...nice recording. what I'm missing is a bit of beef in the guitars. They sound very clear but could use some low mids.
Good job!

:D:D

Good song, fun to listen to.

I think vocals should come up a bit. You have them lower than the guitars. It leaves a hole in the middle and gives the impression that the guitar panning is too wide, where panning might otherwise be okay if the vocals fully filled the middle. just my opinion, though.

Peace,

edit: Forgot to say I listened to Ship.

4YDebt - really nice: the only issues I have are with the cymbal panning - too one sided - and whilst I like the guitar tone (Wombats) & the bass tone (scooped? proggy as all get out) there's not much in the middle which gives an impression of a vacant space. I like the vocal levels and the panning of them works sometimes but not always so perhaps you could use it as an effect rather than always.
Lyrically I'm a little jaded by oh oh, wo oh oh of late - the story is good and I'm sure you could've found the words.
Did you add the water to the noodles at any stage?
