I think I print this out every time you post it, then lose it by the time you post it again.

Bwahaha - me too !! :D

Some of that stuff I read when I was first browsing this site. Great to see it again. Thanks.

Thanks again, Ed. I almost thought this was another resurrection of the original until I looked at the date.

I seem to remember more fire the first time around, too? Or am I making that up? Maybe I'm thinking of a different thread- an old rant that was labelled something like "Alright, now I'm really mad! :(" and proceeded to be some of the most informational stuff around- all masked as Ed pissed off about the bad mixing he'd been hearing all over the board. Drew a lot of attention as I recall.

Anyway- good read. Mixing hasn't changed and if you weren't around for the first and second incarnations this is the stuff that makes this board worth haunting.

Take care,
Chris

If anybody has ALL the original posts, PM me with it, and I can update the original with all the text. It seems that I might have had a few more posts that are not contained here too?

You are God. End of story. You've helped me immensely....and yes, I'm one of those retards that can't mix to save his soul....

I'm having this overwhelming sense of Deja Vu.....
LOL, I kept looking at the date, and thought that the HR server had a hiccup somewhere :D :p

The funny thing is that the next time Ed decides to resurrect this stuff - which if it stays on schedule, should be sometime around summer 2008 - someone will feel deja vu again and post that. Then the rest of us will feel deja vu over the deja vu posts :).

You guys are ALL badasses...Jesus, so much useful info... I can't effin' take it! Just looked at your interactive frequsency chart, OMG I need that...This is AWESOME!!!

I think the Ed Rei mixing thing is a pretty good read. For someone who has lived under a rock and has never cracked open a book or read a single magazine article that will basically say the exact same things. I guess it's just kind of useful / convenient to have all the "mixing 101 for dummies" stuff gathered together in one post.

But as for the whole "I'm going to share secrets" thing ... hate to burst Ed's bubble, but these are not like some hidden mysteries that are somehow being revealed for the first time. Not any moreso than my recipe for a turkey sandwich. You got your turkey ... you got your bread ... I do, however, commend Mr. Van for scouring all of the "mixing basics" guides and assembling some of the more pertinant info for the beginner in one place. The newbs around here apparently have a hard enough time with the search function. God forbid we make them actually have to crack open a book.

Althought some of his "edicts" could certainly be called in to question as being no more than personal preferences or general guidelines / starting points (i.e. no more than 3 db reduction when compressing vocals , never boost anything under 250 on a guitar track, etc.)

Not to mention his apparent fondness for ignoring some advances in modern audio; namely the potential use of light multiband compression or a de-esser, rather than his suggestion of manually going through every single freakin' instance of a vocal track where you hear something offensive and then taming it manually with EQ, etc. A great idea, I suppose, for someone who likes creating extra work for themselves.

All in all, a pretty decent read, though.

So lesscock, 7 years ago when I first wrote this, what "mixing basic guides" were around?

Year after year after year, you prove that you are just envious of my ability to condense ideas into easy to understand essays that people LIKE to read! ;)

The "secrets" thing was already addressed in the original post. Either you have the reading retention level of a 4th grader and understand it, or you don't. Sooooooooooo....I guess if the shoe fits...:)

I like how you create scenarios out of what I wrote that aren't there. I don't expect anything more from you though, because again, the jealousy and envy drip from posts like the above. It is all good. Most here already know that you are cynical, bitter, and spiteful hag.

Great post for newbies, I really do hope they read it. I would never have the time or patience to come up with that long of an article lol. I tried once, and it became like a page, and that's all I wrote... Honestly, (the information was great), but the post was WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY long, lol. I read through the first post, and got to the second one and I told myself I'll read it later...

I don't care who wrote down a particular idea first. It's valuable to hear production ideas that are based on the experience of someone who's recording work you respect.

"Newbie info" has been mentioned a few times... I think this goes way beyond newbie stuff.

It's a lot to read, Ed. If I got a little distracted with it after the first 100 paragraphs, then I apologize. If my criticism was already addressed, then that was my mistake and certainly didn't mean anything by it.

Like I said, I thought it was a good read, and I think you've done a great service for newbs who don't like to do a lot of research or read books, etc. And you have a very straight-forward and candid way of explaining things that someone less technically savy can relate to. But to assume any "jealousy" on my part would be more than a bit presumptuous. Assuming that this info has been "published" moreless somewhere in the web, you've left it open to criticism. I apolgoize if my comments hurt your feelings in some way, but it wasn't my inention.

Have a nice day.

My views on you are different as of now, you are even a smarter man than I thought :D

Every once and a while I actually agree with Chessrock. This is one of those times, to a certain extent. As far as these being secrets of mixing, no they are not. Amongst professionals and/or people that have been doing this for a while, this is kind of how things are done.

Secrets or not however, Ford Vans post has a lot of great information and good technique for those people that do not already know these things. Personally, I do not care who wrote it, when it was written or anything. I am glad it was recently posted, or reposted, or however anyone chooses to see it. All personal stuff aside, there is good information there, and plenty of people around here who really need to hear it:)

This may not neccessarily be 'uncovered secrets' in the literal sense. But I have heard a lot of newbies, ask for these 'insider secrets' for a good mix. I remember reading a very long argument where some dude was convinced that there was a secret method that is followed for everything, and got pissed off because everyone of course told him that their wasn't. Of course we know that there isn't. But to your average beginner, if there's a 'secret recipe', then this is a damn good example of it. :)

I don't have a problem with the word "secrets" in quotes. Secrets they may not be, but for newbs it will grab their attention and maybe it will benefit them and anyone else who reads it for that matter.

Thanks Ed.
