I want to trade my AT4033 for a C-1

Hi Harvey,

Quick question if I may since we're on the subject of Audio Technica condenser microphones? Do you know the diaphragm sizes of the AT 4047SV, AT4050 and AT4060 by any chance?
All three mics are listed as "large diaphragm" condenser mics, which I believe to be 1" in diameter. The 4033 does not say anything like "large diaphragm" anywhere in the literature.

you mentioned having an nt2 ,h2h,

How would you describe its sound. I really like it after hearing bruce, Alan and Kabudokans posts.

If I were to buy a vocal mic for under $400, it definitely would be the nt2.

The NT2 is my choice for MY voice on vocals. I don't like it for female vocals though. But my voice is very punchy and tight using the NT2. My voice sounds best on it when using the close proximity effect and getting in close to get a really full vocal track out of it. Good low end response, but you have to get close. I also love the sound it gets with Electric guitar cabinets. I just got a huge sound from the NT2 alone on my Fender Blues DeVille cab.

The NT2 is dual diaphragm or large diaphragm?

If large, does this make it better suited to vocals?
I was all over this AT4033 thinking it was a large diaphragm.

H2H, do you have a sample of your vocals with the NT2?
I don't remember....did you not like the vocal parts you did with the AT4033? Why?

well, the NT2 has a switch for omni, so maybe it has dual diaphragms.

I dont have any web space to put up samples right now :(. Like I said, I like it better for MY voice. I have tried it with two female voices and just didn't prefer it over some other things I tried, namely a Neumann U89 I had there at the time I was borrowing. I never did like MY voice with the 4033, in fact with purchases of other mics I have, I haven't preferred using it over other things for some time now. It was mainly my #1 amp mic, but I realized I like the NT2 on that for my sound better than the 4033. When I recorded my friend Mary, I actually preferred an Apex430 over the 4033...you never know what just may work.

I guess it all really just depends on the sound you're going for. I have my preferences like everyone else. I think I decided to make a jut down to Nashville to MacMidiMusic on about Wednesday and go ahead and pick a C-1. Since I haven't actually used it on anything, I cant say if I like it or not, but I'm really interested to put it next to the NT2, which has become my staple mic lately.

You might like the C1 better for vocals but it doesn't have the -10 db pad or hi-pass filter(bass roll-off).

Ahhhh guess what? The C1 now has a pad and hi pass filter. The new ones just came in, but I expect the dealers will only want to sell the old ones first.

I am only revealing this on this newsgroup as all of you have been very good to me. If you email me privately, I can tell you what dealers some of these new ones have gone to. I will be back from the AES Show on Wednesday.

4033 vs. C1... this is indeed a good question for me...

I've got a 4033 (as well as some Audix CX111s)... I like the 4033, but I have a lot of trouble getting it to set down in the mix. Seems that the proximity effect of it causes me trouble.... too dark up close and too roomy as you step back.

I've heard (from various people) that the C1 is a good mic choice for lower/raspier vocals... and that it doesn't have as defined of a proximity effect as the 4033...

Thoughts?

(I'm waiting for Alan to get back to town before I call him ;-))

Harvey or others

Is it true that the NT2 uses the same (cardioid) capsule as the NT1. Would this mean that the two mics would sound very similar (assuming the NT2 is switched to cardioid)?

other sort of related question:

Is the AKG3000B a back electret condenser or a true condenser? What is the size of the diaphram?

If the NT2 is a multi-pattern mic, it will not be identical to the single pattern NT1, nor will it use the same capsule.

The AKG C3000b uses an electret capsule.

velvet, the higher part of my singing range is a clear sounding 2nd tenor, and the C1 sounds just fine. When I sing baritone or
high bass it does bring out the bottom notes (in a good way).
If it sounds a little boomy the easiest solution is to back off the mike and/or use the new high pass filter.

P.S. I guess my C1 is a "vintage" C1 now (no switches).
Just kidding Alan, still VERY happy with mine, it just
forces me to learn more about mike placement!

chessparov,

Thanks... that what I assumed... I just wasn't sure if the C1 had LESS of a proximity effect than the 4033. On the AT it is pretty strong and takes some struggling to get it right. I was hoping the C1 was a little more forgiving.

Thanks,
Velvet Elvis

Hi VirtualSamana,

The AKG C 3000B is a one-inch true large diaphragm size as is the C 4000B and C414B-ULS and C414 TLII also. Their half inch models are the C 1000S and their pencil condensers like the C 391B. BTW, the AKG Blue Line C 391B is a killer pencil condenser...I love this one on my Martin acoustic--Amazing sound!:)

Me too!

I want to trade my lightly used 4033 too. I haven't used it once since I got my NTK. I thought I would one time for an electric guitar, but then I just put the NTK there, and liked it. I'll trade it for just about anything interesting. Not porn or golf gear, you know, anything "musically interesting."

I'll trade you for a symetrix 528 . The symetrix used cost me more than the 4033 is going for new. I believe that you have a joemeek vc6q? I can assure you that you will prefer the 528.
or a tascam 244 4 track and a shure sm58 that can be heard on this track.
