I am NOT a Gear Whore. ;)
right now, i have AKG c430's. they are ok. i want something better though.

i dont know which route to go, LDC or SDC.

i was originally thinking Rode NT5's, but they seem kinda lower end.

so i thought Neumann KM184's (bstock, for saving money...)
but maybe i should just get a pair of LDC's? Maybe AT4050's?
Maybe Shure SM81's?

im not so sure, my budget is sub- $1200.

or do i not need new ones ? i love buying mics though.

Check out the Peluso CEMC6's for under $700. I've got a matched pair and they are excellent mics IMHO. You can find them here. http://tinyurl.com/jcwrp Good luck with what ever you decide on. :)

I think Audio Technica 4041's are great overheads. I regularly choose them over much more expensive mics, and they shine as overheads. I think they're very natural sounding, and sit very well in a mix with little to no eq. You don't end up with harsh or spitty sounding cymbals either. I think you can get a pair used for about $300 to $400 on ebay.

AT-4051s are good also. About $250 each on e-bay. Josephson C-42s work well too. @$700 for a matched pair used.

I've had C430's. Josephson C-42's kick the pantaloons off of them. KM184's are pretty good too.

Maybe I am weird, but I really like AT4050s as overheads... not to mention they work on a ton of other stuff too.

My choice would be the Earthworks M30s or the SM81s.

i checked out the peluso's. they look like a nice option. my boss has a peluso tube mic and its really nice.

so i think nt5's and c4's are out of the running. i think the km184s are out too.

so peluso's, sm81's, or a pair of LDC like the AT40XX series. decisions..

In that price range I'd be seriously tempted to pick up a pair of the new Audio Technica ATM450 side address small diaphragms and a pair of Avenson STO-2 omnis. There's 2 pairs of mics that really deliver on a sonic level without breaking the bank, and two different flavors to complement each other.

The ATM450 are one of my latest purchases for my studio, as they deliver a depth and punch from overhead drums that is hard to beat. Imaging is so great without being an overly crisp mic, no spitty nasty stuff happening. It's one of the few mics I've used that I would use on every position on a drum kit if needed as it just works everywhere on drums and due to their side address design are very easy to place:

The Avenson deliver a natural and balanced sound on drums, again the top end is very natural without crazy harsh stuff happening. Omni can be very useful on good sounding kits in good sounding rooms.

How does the ATM450 sound on the snare? I guess also that the bleed from the hi-hat sounds also better with it than when using SM57?

SM81's will do but, I don't know how they'd compare to your current mics. Warhead may be on to something. You know, if you follow his advice you could have the two OH you already own plus 4 more to mix and match for a potentially awesome kit sound.

Personally I've used the AKG, Neumann, and Shure that you listed. If I had my choice of those three for overheads, I'd probably choose the SM81, to be honest.

If you want to go LDC, how about the AKG C414 (really probably my 1st choice overall) or Shure KSM27/32/44?

Please note that I work for Shure. I feel I need to point that out when talking about Shure product.

From my own collection, I own a pair of AKG C1000s which I use as overheads and as a stereo pair for ensemble recordings. I've been happy with them in that application.

Have you used the KSM141s? I am a HUGE fan of those. I've sold my SM81s . . .
