I have a Sovtek Mig 100 head and 4x12 and 2x12 cabinets. I've been very pleased with the tone of the amp, maybe b/c it's my first tube amp.

However, it's a bit cumbersome. The high and low gain channels are completely separate, meaning you have to unplug and plug into another jack to switch channels. Also, the high gain channel is considerably louder than the low gain, as might be expected. But the result is that to switch from clean to distortion, you have to replug and adjust the Volume and Gain settings. Kinda excludes the possibility of switching in the middle of a song.

I would like to be able to switch channels by throwing a switch, and keep the volume level close to the same, just changing the tone to a higher gain.

I'm fairly comfortable with the idea of modding the amp myself, even with a somewhat limited understanding of electronics. If I screwed it up, then I'd have to go out and buy something else!! If I'm successful, I may want to do some other mods as well. At any rate, I'm sure to learn something.

So, if anyone has any suggestions on modifications that would resolve this, I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks,
G

You can get a simple A-B switch box that will do this without having to pull out the soddering iron. Of course, if you have the desire to play with electronics, go for it! (but I wouldnt, i take my amps to someone who knows what theyre doing) :)

I thought about the A/B switch idea, but that wouldn't solve the volume problem. It may be worth a try, though.
