If you're still in the mood...

Just uploaded one to your site. Artist name: Alan Butler, Song: Last Chance Saloon. Also send an email to you with a quick question when you get a chance.

Cheers,

pAp.

pAp,

Already responded, and for god sake go to your link section and get your short URL ;) :

Very, very nice acoustic number. I like the placement of the background vocals, I might bring them up a quarter notch, other than that, beautiful mix.

Thanks for the quick response and the comment on the mix. I really like the new options in the artist admin section, sorry for the dumb question.

Waldo,

Let me have it on a couple of fronts.

Is this the correct URL? why is it not a direct link.(I'm very net green!) Or is it? I don't wanna cut out nowhere when I post a link/hyperlink(I don't know the difference) to a song on the site.

I wanna make a collection of songs w/ vocals and git live. This song is a test for that concept. What can I do to improve?

You've a great ear, please voice up more often or even offer critics via your site (thanks again for giving me a home).

I have a recording of Contraband - live@yuddah.

The recording was made using a minidisk plugged into the stereo outs of the mixer - i didn't even notice...nevertheless...kinda funk/groove style

http://www.kuks.f2s.com/contraband/mp3s.htm

PS sorry it isn't streaming - you'll have to download the whole songs...it is definately worth it....if you're into bass, tell me what you think of the chops on "Sometime"

Hi Waldo

I just set up an account at Nowhwere..
Here is the link
There are five genres represented and all of the recording is definitely "home" recording.
Let me know what you think and ....thanks for the web-site.:D

P.S. I will be uploading some solo stuff in the near future..just FYI.
Joe:)

>I wanna listen to some more tunes today, since I'm bored at the moment.... Post yer best, and I'll tune in!

With the volume of stuff you have at NoWhereRadio, you still need more stuff to slog through?

That's hard core. I salute you. :)

I hope you haven't come down yet off of whatever you're on... :)

I posted a garage mix of an old standard that my monitors tell me came out pretty sweet. There's no reverb and no compression.
And only 3 mics. Everything achieved here was done with mic placement. A real garage. Damping out the room was discussed and dismissed due to laziness.

Summertime by the C-Notes.

Sorry, but that struck my humor bone.

I was wonder what grabbed Waldo, other than mind altering fugus, myself.

And, the heady conversation of arcitechual wonders to be achieved in the "garage/basement" and never realised unleashed memories of slack days and slack bands.

BTW. You are amazing at mike placment.
I will pay much more attention to this most important tool in the future.

>Hope you enjoy....

Yeah I did. That even got Marilyn excited.

You accepting extra tracks for this work in progress?

My only complaint was the overdone reverb.

Theron,

That is the 'real' URL to your page, however, I designed a 'short URL' system for everyone to have something much easier to remember.

If you visit you artist administration, and check the info for the artist you signed up, you will see a spot that says 'short URL'.

It may already contain your username. You can change to to whatever you want, providing someone else doesn't already have the same.

Basically, it's http://nowhereradio.com/(shorturl) where (shorturl) is replaced with whatever you put in the spot I mentioned above. Any page on your long list can be added after the short URL, so http://nowhereradio.com/theron/singles would link to exactly the same spot you posted below.

You can get more links etc., from clicking on the 'Get Links' link on your artist admin.

Lastly, what particular song in your list would you like me to critique?

(And sorry for the delay, niece and nephew came over and I ate dinner with them).

Voxvendor,

Something Wrong - Only thing I'd say is make the mix a bit more rich, it's a bit much on the high end. Drums are mic'd nearly perfect. Vocals are a bit low on occasion, lead guit. needs to come up a bit during the break around 2:04.

I don't hear the bass guitar clear enough in the mix, sounds as though it's panned left, bring it closer center. Volume on it is fine. Anything with deep tones, or intention to be 'heard' should be close to center, since on most modern stereos will crank up the bass on the center/woofer.

Overall, very good. Reminds me of 80's rock :) If that's the intention than the vocal effects are good, otherwise, back off the reverb a tiny bit and add some sustain.

Vocal Layering Example - Assuming this is not to be critiqued ;)

Special K,

My appologies on skipping by you here, I started the download when I started to list to Joro's tracks, it's about 2% completed at the time I completed listening to Joros tracks. The routing from Canada to Australia can be awful at times... I will write the critique as soon as the song is downloaded.

Joro,

Three Thosand Miles - First off, Normalize the whole thing. You can well wait until mastering for this, but it's better to work with a full volume range mix, easier to critique as well ;) It's a bit murky, but a little extra panning here and there would help that.

Lead vocals, bring them up front and center. I picture the singer sitting down on a chair at the back corner of the room... Turn the volume on the vocals up a bit.

Lead guitar needs a tad more volume, as well as the bass. Drums sound properly mic'd, however the crash is too loud on strike, you may crompress it slightly, or lower the volume of it and eq. it low. Hi-hat and snare are just fine. Kick could use a little lower eq. and be brought more to the center.

Try leaving the background vocals right where they are, with the above effects, you may need a slight increase in volume. Don't match the vocals to the background, rather the background vocals a little lower. It sounds as though there is more than 2 background tracks, try spreading them across the stereo spectrum. Left-center-right if there is three tracks, etc.

I like the air of the song, but if I was the engineer, I'd be asking the lead singer to smile while singing ;) It is amazing how much a simple smile changes the mood of the vocals!

GIVE ME LOVE - BIG difference in vocals, much more up front on this one. No normalization needed here.

The spoken part around 1:40 needs to be turned up. The part is intentionally 'whispered' I know, but needs a little boost or the song gets a bit of a 'satanic' air ;)

For a latin song, the latin drums are sure quiet... Maybe a boost on them, or a different mic placement. It sounds almost as if the mic is too far away, or beneath the bongo... An SM56 about 1 inch from the rim of it angled diagnally towards the center, but just out of the way of the players hands when he strikes the edge, is most appropriate.

Nice mellow tune, already got me in the mood to hop into bed with some sexy latino woman...

ANGLE BLUE - First thing I noticed... Angel, not angle.... Unless you are talking about corners, in which case, seek help ;)

Bass needs to sit in the center and get a tiny bit more volume. Acoustic needs to be matched up a little closer to the vocals, as in volume and placement. A couple notches up.. Country is notorious for three piece, one out front, one on the right, and drummer on the left type placements, but recorded is drums center, bass wide half right, vocals and acoustic dead center, vocals wide. Or at least, in my experience ;)

You 'could' call this 'country blues', but really, all country is blues, unless it's 'new' country. Decent tune, not much to do there.

Mercer Country - Vocals are perfect for country, harmonica placement is excellent. The 'banjo' needs to come a little more up front, can barely make it out. Sounds like a mandolin in there somewhere, once again, it needs to come out a bit more, little tiny bit more volume. Acoustic I think should be up center with the vocals, but a tiny bit less volume than the mandolin and banjo.

Bass is fine for country, leave it there, maybe tweak it up a tiny bit.

Tunnel of Light - Once again, guitars need more volume. I might turn the lead vocals down a tiny bit, and eq them a tiny bit lower. Harmony vocals are fine.

Other than that, nice acoustic balad. Had me doing the head bobbing back and forth ;)

Come Christmas Morning - Turn the bass down about 3 notches, and normalize the mix. Lead acoustic up about 1 notch. The hi-hat sounds like... Wait, sleigh-bells? Bring the sleigh bells center, mic them individually and keep them center away from all other sounds, they are too blended with the drums.

I think that should be all you need on that one, but after the normalization I'd probably have to have another listen.

Overall, excellent song-writing skill, and not bad overall production! It's especially difficult to balance out all these different genres, and you a doing pretty good!

Special K,

Okay, this is tough, two channel input, there's no way for me to give you input on how to remix this ;)

Excellent for a live, one-shot mix. I gotta say I LOVE the chops on that, I've wanted to learn how to slap up a tune like that for quite some time.

Definately let me know when you get a multi-track record going, I'd love to help you out, even just for the excuse to listen to more funked up tunes ;)

What role did you play in this?

W.

That clarifies it. Sort of.
I was refering to the "bed of discontent"song on my list.

I thought that the link would make that clear. Now I understand how it wouldn't and shouldn't.

I'd still like the feedback as far as the recording goes.
Thanks much for your time and patience.

drstawl,

Well, I live my life pretty much in squalor because of my love for music... Sometime I'll show you pics of the hundreds of CDs strewn about my room, my office, and then the tapes, 8-tracks, several thousand LPs, EPs, and much more....

I've listened to every song I own at least once, and every song on NoWhere at least once, unless it was uploaded in the last couple hours and I haven't had a chance yet...

Some days I get bored and am in the mood to critique tunes a bit, today I felt like hitting the mixing side of things being as it's been a couple weeks since I've sat behind the faders myself...

Summertime - I see what you mean about the padding, there's a bit of bounce back from the keys off the walls.

Only thing I'd do is darken the vocals a tiny bit, and maybe add a tiny bit of delay/microverb to them. And I mean 'micro'. Might shift the piano a little more closer to center as well, can't hear it much on the left enough. A tiny bit more volume on the bass as well, it sounds at times as though you were fiddling with faders, or the basist decided to lean forward into it and hit the strings a bit harder.... Question is whether you can do that without having to re-place and re-record... Obviously, the style doesn't require intense drum micing, you using an overhead on it?

Otherwise, nice mellow ragtime piece!

W.

Queue,

A CyberPlace in the Sun,

Kick ass on the intro! Vocals have got to be turned up if you are going to crank the synth up that high in the mid spots. I'd lose a bit of the reverb, and maybe use a tiny bit more sustain instead. Eq. the vocals a bit lower as well.

Synth could come down a tiny bit at its peaks, it's almost shocking how loud it hops.

Snare is a bit higher than the rest of the kit, although this is natural, nobody likes to hear it in the recording, weird ain't it?

You might knock the bass down one notch as well, and normalize the whole thing a little bit lower, it's a bit hot. Other than that, sounds like a slow brit-pop number that you'd see a bunch of early 80's punkers dancing to ;)

Should check out Mani of a very similar genre on NWR. I believe his site is 'http://nowhereradio.com/mani'. He also does quite a few net collabs, amongst others. Maybe y'all could team up a bit?
