I use Logic Audio for PC but want to get a mac. Go for the G5 or the G4???

As the topic states, I am a Logic user v.5.5 on a PC. Well I have long been waiting to get an Apple but I wanted to see what happens with a possible G5 so that I do not get a G4 and the next day a big bad NASA like G5 comes out. Well now it seems that the G5 is upon us. But I do not know if I should go for the G5 or not. It is NOT a money issue. I just have read all over that OS9 is still a very prefered OS to OSX. But Logic boasts awesome support for OSX. Obviously I have never even used Logic on a Mac so I probably could tell no recognizable difference since I would have no basis for comparison.

Has anyone here any advice for a las such as myself that wants to get a new Mac to use with Logic Audio Plat. v. 6 with a MOTU 828mkII firewire interface?

What do ya think guys and gals?

Here's my bits of info. I recently bought (a few months ago) a G4 933 w/ superdrive. Back when I bought it the MDD was having problems w/ noise and the new G4's did not support OS9. I have not looked back. I can do EVERYTHING I want including OSX, the new G5's look totally swank and fast, wholly crap. If I was buying right now and price was no object, I would still like the option of using OS9. But that is just me. I think the growing pains of OSX are almost over so I will be making the jump soon.

My biggest issue is to still use Cubase or cross grade to Logic.

the g5's are shipping with OSX v10.2, jaguar. Soon OSX v10.3, panther will be here. If you're really worried you can wait for Panther, but I have a friend who does a lot of video/audio production running Jaguar on dual 866mhz g4 with no problems.

I'm still not convinced the G5 is all what Apple claims, especially when they are being accused of lying on benchmark results.

I am actually going to have to agree with brzilian on this one (that's right, I said it, agree with brzilian!).

As much as I do like Macs, the lame ass Photoshop benchmark means absolutely dick to so many people, yet they continue to base everything around it.

They now have a Logic/Mac vs. SX/WinXP comparison, but that's kinda apples to oranges comparison, seeing as how they're two entirely different apps. Why not SX/Mac to SX/PC? Oh yeah, Apple wants to showcase Logic.

Two other things bothered me about the G5:

1. 9 fans? Sweet Jesus, does it run that friggin hot?
2. I thought the IBM/Apple partnership was going to result in faster and cheaper products to be more competitive with Wintels?

Well, they're faster than they were, but they aren't that much cheaper, if at all.

That being said, this is relatively new, and hopefully the kinks will be worked out. It'll be interesting to see how they do it with the notebooks, if the CPUs run that damn hot.

If money's not an object, get a G5. They're quiet, fast, and a little more future-proof. Yeah, the Photoshop benchmark is tired, but I'm pretty sure they're at least faster than the previous G4s. Logic is owned by Apple, so I don't think compatibility will ever be an issue.

If money is an object, get a PC and get a better DAW than Logic.

I am thinking about switiching to MAC as well, and have Logic 5.5, too. I got an email from Emagic that you can purchase an up/cross-grade package from Logic 5.5 (pc) to 6 (MAC) from the Emagic sales department for $129. Sounds like a damn good deal!

If I only knew whether that means you can still keep the old Logic 5.5. I'd like to have both so I can keep my pc and do some editing on it in Logic. According to Emagic, Logic 6 runs super-stable on the G5, and even faster coz its "optimized for the G5". I dunno if that's true, though.

So who wants to be the first and try it out??

I would say G5. The new G4s don't run OS9 anyway, so why lock yourself up in yesterday's technology? Also the G5 case was specifically made to be quiet and to me that's a big plus.

Polaris, I have 12 fans in my PC because my room tends to get hot, and I run them at slower speeds to minimise noise. The 9 fans running at slower speed on the G5 are partly responsible for it's quiet operation. As for price, go and price a comparable system (not just CPU speed but all the other doodads like combo drives, kick ass video card, gigabit ethernet, FireWire, etc...) from Dell, Gateway or such reputable PC vendor and compare the prices. You'll be surprised how close the Mac prices are to PCs.

Photoshop tests are included because the main Mac pro base are graphics artists and Photoshop is their bread and butter. However, I agree that the Logic/Cubase test is about as meaningful as asking for hard-boiled tomatos.

One thing to consider however with OSX is VST plugin support. There are some AU wrappers that supposedly work really well, but YMMV.
