Well that was the early stereotype, and it may have been somewhat accurate. But it's caught on in a much larger set now. One time that probably is valid is that homeschool kids are likely to be more intelligent than the average public school kids, because intelligence is hereditary, and to put it bluntly, stupid parents aren't likely to homeschool

It also varies a lot by area. Up in the DC area it's very common. Down here much less so, because the schools are smaller and very well funded, active parents, etc. The only kid I know of here is homeschooled so she can spend more time focused on dance, she aspires to be a professional ballerina and from what I've seen, has a fair shot at the big time.
Most kids here would rather be professional surfers
