Agreed. I think the one useful reminder here was something that I don't think about much, which is the value of using IEC1 eq at 15 ips. As I pointed out, the perception of tape hiss is considerably reduced relative to NAB at 15 ips, all other things being equal, while low end headroom is increased, too. i don't think about it much because I always used my widetrack machines that way, so it's just part of the landscape here. Jay McNight has a nice white paper on his site in the tech articles section explaining all the math details.

I agree RE NAB vs IEC1. I have read the white paper and think that I also saw a table (in that paper or somewhere else) of the offests needed to calibrate IEC1 using a NAB MRL tape (I have only an NAB MRL).

Tascam BR-20 have both NAB and IEC1 available by front panel switch. What is perhaps less well known is that Tascam 32, 34B and those using the same channel cards have IEC selectable on the card by jumpers. Some of the cards do not populate the IEC parts but that can be rectified.

You know, if this keeps up, I may just have to roll up my sleeves and get that M-23 1/4" machine up and working! Dang! Here I was thinking I'd get off easy and keep the mix in the digital realm.
