Rotlfmao to this.

Even the widely crucified black-metal has bands you CAN NOT say sound alike.
The sophisticated symphony-like Dimmu Borgir sounds hell apart from, lets say, rockish motorhead-three-cords-a-song sounding Carpathian Forest.
In general metal..
Can you REALLY not hear the difference between, say, Meshuggah and Strapping young lad????.. Vader and Bolt thrower??? etc..

Wash yer ears and get them checked! :D

Maybe it's just that you're getting bored with metal myhatbroke?

Try giving it a break and listening to other types of music for a while.

I can see what you're saying though - but I would extend it and say that I haven't really heard much that's truly new and original in music (aside from the avant garde scene) for a while.

I can't speak for myhatbroke but when I started losing interest in metal, I thought all the new metal bands were sounding the same and it was boring the hell out of me. That was about 5-6 years ago. I've heard very few metal bands since that have really caught my ears. I started searching in other genre's of music that I've never heard and found some cool stuff, some of which changed the way I think about music. I would'nt say that I became more open minded because I kind of developed a snobbery toward a lot of mainstream stuff. My point is, maybe myhatbroke is just tired of being spoonfed music by the industry and should go exploring for new music.........bars, clubs, internet, music stores, etc.

If you think metal is becoming monotonous, look harder. Yes these are a lot of monotonus bands out there, but the same can be said for any genre. But those of us who care should really have no trouble sifting the good stuff out from the rest of the crap.

Blimey, it shouldn't frustrate you that much that you should feel the need to write endless "Metal sucks these days" threads which themselves are becoming monotonous. I mean are you actually going somewhere with this? Do you have the 'next big original thing' to show us? If you do, then please, quit beating round the bush and unveil it. :D Cos I'm always eager for new stuff to listen to :D

You know, a lot of people don't give a shit whether they are giving people anything new or not. I don't sit and think about "is this original" when I write, I do it cos a) "does it sound good to me?" and b) is this fun.
We all have a choice whether we listen to a band or not, but if they want to make music that they have fun making, and someone is wiling to pay them for it, then why shouldn't they?

Would you turn your back on a career in music and get a desk job instead just because you didn't think your music was 'new' or 'original' enough? I know I wouldn't. Its not about being in it for the money, its about getting paid to something you love doing. Why should I give a fuck if some random dude 20,000miles away doesn't think I'm original?

Myhatbroke, this bullshit is getting old. What are you trying to prove to us? That you are more metal than we are?

The fact that so many bands sound alike is quite simple really. It's becasue there are 200 million bands in metal these days. Back in the 80's you had only a handful compared to today. Most of those bands were doing something original...but that's becasue nobody had really done any of that yet, it was inevitable. The bands that are pushing the boundaries with their music today are often more obscure becasue most people are too hard headed about metal. They don't want to accept bands that are really doing something different. People get pissed at bands that change their sound, and they often overlook new bands that are too unique. Truly adventurous bands are often limited to a small cult following and you won't see their name pop up everywhere. I remember when Opeth was like that.....
Dude you are just not in tune with the metal world at all.
And another thing, alot of people who truly love metal don't mind a little bit of monotony. Hell, I love it when I find a band that reminds me of another band that I love. For example, I discovered a band a while back called Gory Blister from Italy. Their album "Art Bleeds" reminds me so much of late period Death it's not even funny. It's one of my favorite albums now. Do you love Carcass, but wish they were still together? Listen to Necrony or General Surgery.....Want to hear some classic Cannibal Corpse meets early Six Feet Under....Check out Torture Killer. Metal fans have a rabid appetite for the same old stuff too...don't count that out. I love rehashing.

If you think Dream Theater are the of Pinacle of prog, go check out Spiral Architect and pick your jaw up off the floor. If you want to hear a completely original style of extreme metal, check out something like Alarum.
Bands are constantly pushing the boundaries of music, you just won't hear about them everywhere like the bands you're hung up on. You might not like them either, but they are there.

So to answer your question..."Is there anything else that can be done with metal?"
Absolutely. Will you like it? Maybe not. It sounds like you're just pissed becasue metal has progressed beyond the style that you appreciate and you're not digging it. It really sounds like you want people to go backwards. Instead of forwards too. It's okay, I want people to go backwards sometimes too. I want more bands like Cynic and Atheist. What's wrong with that?
That reminds me of another point..... People can be pretty slow to catch on. Hell, most metal fans I know completely overlooked stuff like Atheist back in the early 90's and it wasn't until their catalog was reissued last year that their popularity blew up. It's just becasue they were doing something different. I think there will be other bands that go through a similar period of rejection...that's just how metal is.

Ive heard some new screamo and hard core stuff and a handfull of them have something going as far as originality and songwriting. But the other 90% are terrible and got signed cause that's the thing now. THe record industry is so different than it use to be. Which plays a major part in all this.

psyopus!!! they are from my hometown, insane shit right there. most ridiculous live show short of like... gwar or something... minus the costumes and intergalactic homeland storys. but yeah those guys are just amazing. period.

Myhatbroke, I don't get it. Why are you posting stupid shit like this. You are an anti-metalhead. Why the fuck would you even mention Atreyu and Avenged Sevenfold? They're pre-teen mall bands that attract pussies like you. They aren't metal. They are riding this new metal wave that a real metalhead can see right through.

But instead of posting about how much I hate you, I'd like to help you through your stupidity. Look at record labels. Check out the different bands on Metalblade, Roadrunner, NuclearBlast, go their websites, check out every band they have. Look for other labels besides that. If you're a real metalhead then it won't be monotonus. If you look somewhere else besides advertised shit bands you might have a revelation and cure your stupidity. God damn it your stupid.

I tried to tell him earlier but he's in an innovating metal band.

Metallica is the most overly redundant bullshit, and people that refuse to give that up and move on are being difficult.

Or maybe we just really like the music. It's extremely arrogant of you to say that. Stop talking out of your ass. If you don't like Metallica - good for you. But don't tell me why I do or don't like something.

I"m going to back Esp on this one, the reason I've loved Metallica also goes beyond just a few CD's. It's their entire demeanor on stage and the audience is unsurpassable. The crowd is just so dedicated at a concert that it adds an extra element of fun to the entire concert going experience. And for those who say the old shit is better...Well most of it is but it's called evolution

Ha Ha...

Love it... sorry but you're not old enough to have had a Metal epiphany.

Atreyu and Avenged Sevenfold aren't metal... they're candy rock :D

real metal is Nevermore, Arch Enemy, Killswitch Engage... and these sound anything but the same...

What's new metal going to be called in a few years? Old new metal? I don't think anyone will be able to remember that far back, or want to :D

I really do think that it is getting harder & harder to find music that is not monotonous or bland. We scots are the worst producing bands like texas & all that crap.

Yes their concerts are spectacular - the energy is palpable. I've seen them 9 times and they never fail to deliver. I took my wife to her first Metallica show a few years back - she was floored. Great live show.

Even those bands are very similar compared to Pig Destroyer, Misery Index, Darkane, Meshuggah, Biohazard, Carcass...
