what really confuses me is that there are so many volume adjustments. , . i'm so confused. Once i figure out what should be what volume, maybe this can work itself out

One more time just in case, let's break these down-

"There's the MIDI send volume on the track view, the console volume of that particular MIDI track"
These both in cake(?)..as in, the track volume slider in 'track' view and the same thing in 'console' view?

"the master playback volume on the soundcard, the record volume of the soundcard"
Can't help here, never seen this...Someone jump in please. ;)

" and the MIDI individual volume on the soundcard."
I'm thinking this might be the one. And all I have to go one is my experience with hardware synths- they are set up with a set analog gain structure, and if you do not have the midi playing at a good strong signal to begin with, then raise it at the output, it will have a lot of noise brought up with it. (All old news I'm sure..

Someone around here knows the signal sequence. Assuming the notes are coming from cake, what determines that they are at 127 to the synth?
(This is what happens when you try to help but you're out of your element.

mixsit is right. The track and console view volumes are the same. there are five volume adjustments i have to worry about.

1. Cakewalk MIDI track volume.
2. Soundcard Master Playback Volume
3. Soundcard Master Recording Volume
4. Soundcard Synth Volume\
5. Cakewalk Soundcard Playback Volume

update: i figured out 2 more things about this problem that i think will help immensly:

1. As soon as my internal synth hits the first note, the hiss sticks through until the computer reboots.

2. when i mute everything on the soundcard individually, there is still a hiss. When i mute playback completely with the master volume control, u can't hear it.

Ok, just curious, in your windows mixer, do you "hide" some playback properties? still in your windows mixer, go Options --> Properties, and show all volume controls for playback and recording. By default, some properties is "hiden" (not appeared). You must make sure all appears to take full control.

not to be a smartass Jamez, but yes, i have full control of my soundcard. and i don't use the windows mixer, i use the santa cruz. good suggestion though. :D
