I am somewhat new to computer based recording. I have Cubase LE and my current interface is a Behringer UCA 200 which is USB. I recently got a new laptop which is a HP dv4-1120us, that I want to start using to do my recording (mobility) I want to get a better quality interface. I think that from what I am reading an interface that runs via firewire will be better???? I know that I will have to get an expresscard for the firewire. I want to spend around 300 dollars give or take 50. So I am open to all suggestions..and heads up on any problems that I may run into.

my first interface was the lexicon omega, which i loved! and it comes with cubase LE, which you are already familiar with.

it was 300 bucks, i donno if its cheaper or more expensive now.

the volume control on mine was a little messy... other than that i had no problems.

If your new laptop runs Vista, make sure you get Cubase LE 4... should come free. mine came with cubase LE but needed it for vista... so i called steinberg and lexion and one of them sent me a version of cubase LE 4 for free.

i was able to do some pretty sick shit with that... given it was only 300 bucks worth of gear.

I had the Omega for a while as well. Worked alright. One thing to look at, if you do end up staying with USB (which, if you don't want to record more than two to four tracks at a time will never give you any problems that firewire could circumvent), is figuring out which USB ports on your laptop are USB 1 and which are USB 2. Don't know if this is still an issue with newer laptops, but the one I used the Omega with is about three years old, and it has four USB ports, only two of which are USB 2. Took me the longest time to figure out why sometimes I could record four tracks easily and without hiccups and sometimes it just crapped out on me.

Hi there,

First of all USB 2.0 is not worse than FireWire interface, unless you occupy all of you USB ports with external harddisk and start copying files on them all simultaneously.

As for the interface I would recommend looking at this one
Emu Tracker Pre USB 2.0 Audio Interface

Cheerz!!!!
