I need to upgrade my setuip, im using a rode ntk - m audio buddy mic pre - distressor, should i get a New neumann microphone? or a good mic pre? is the rode ntk good enough for pro sounding album . this is for heavy rock

Yes, the mic pre is the weakest link in that chain.
What is your budget? We can suggest a few to try.

The NTK is "good enough" if it suits your voice. But only you know whether that is the case or not.

I'm with the rest. You need a new preamp. The NTK is top notch on the right voice.

Go for a good versatile pre like API. You can get a single channel or lunchbox at brentaverill.com and expand in the future for pretty cheap. I don't really know what your budget is, but there's a handful of pres that can quickly run the bank dry. I have a phoenix DRS-2 that gets used on everything I could imagine. It's clean but still has some attitude.

hope this helps,
Brandon

If you sound good with just the NTK, I recommend the FMR RNP. The guy I am recording has an amazing voice, and the RNP really brought out his voice through the NTK.

I use my NTK through a DMP3 and it sound really good to me.

Blessings, Terry

Im using the NTK on my voice and i like it, i also like sm-7 on my voice i switch between the both, i rented a neve 1073 and that sounded pretty sweet. would the RNP have more hi's then a great river or a neve?

My budget is around 1400-1500, i think the rode ntk should be fine for me, but im thinking of getting a soundelux mic or just sticking with my ntk and getting a NEVE1073 style mic pre? what do you guys suggest

Man, the Vintech X73 would be perfect for you, but the unit and the PSU takes you over $2k
The Vintech Dual72 will fit your budget and give you 2 channels of very good no-frills Neve 1272 clone.

Don't change the mic yet. The NTK will give you good service until you can save up again after the preamp purchase.

Thanks Henri, I was looking for the X73i, but it's not on the Vintech Distribution website any more. Maybe they are discontinuing it?

I think they are relitivly new and He prob. has them in stock..Go to The Atlas Pro Audio site and click on Vintech..I think they are about 1300 add 250 for the power supply..Good luck

I would suggest you sell me the NTK an move on to bigger an better things!
LOL j/k well not really but i've heard some really good tracks recorded with an NTK
I would try a new pre amp an stick this one out.

Whatever you see happen on the site called 'Vintech Distribution' doesn't matter, because they are NOT the actual company, Vintech Audio. 'Vintech Distribution' is just one of Vintech's dealers, who early on innapropriately purchased the rights to the website and pretends to be the factory. Personally I think the whole thing is in bad taste...you are not the first, and probably not the last person to be misled by this guy. The real and only Vintech Audio website is http://www.vintech-audio.com NOT the other one you went to.

The X73i is alive and well and is always in stock with us at Atlas. This preamp is definitely one of my favorites, I always have 6-8 channels of Vintech in the rack at my commercial recording studios.

You have a Distressor and a decent mic. Now is the time to buy the best microphone preamp (for your style of music) you can afford. IMO you will never regret it.

The audio-buddy you are using is not doing justice to the quite nice mic and compressor that you are using. Get a better pre.
