I have had Three major Breakthroughs

I’ve really noticed something about modern metal (2001+) and this 3k 4k harshness and you can believe me or not but I really truly believe this has come about to a large degree because of mass human deafness.

I would have to agree. Every time my band plays out, I have people saying the vocals are muddy and the guitars are muddy, turn up some highs all the while I'm thinking of backing them off a bit. I tell them to go wash out their ears and get a hearing test. I've been playing live gigs for 22+ years so if anyone should have high end hearing loss it should be me.

I wonder if the deafness is in their ears or in their heads. I get the impression that most of these folks are those who also think that a smiley EQ setting with the bass and the HF boosted into the stratosphere sounds good. Not bcause they're deaf necessarily (though if they keep doing that on earbuds and in four-wheeled subwoofers, they will be soon enough), but becuse they just think that a crappy EQ curve sounds good to begin with.

Of course, smiley face EQ doesn't quite explain the 4k thang, but the lack of head taste in general could.

I wonder if it has anything to do with many Metal guitarists using Mesa Boogie rectifier heads over Marshalls.

I'm wondering if it has anything to do with percieved loudness as a byproduct of the volume wars, or trying to make the tracks sound louder without actually having a higher RMS level.

Also a good point!

Getting guitars to cut through dense metal mixes is yet another.
