I got the pentatonic blues

Well about 6 months ago I took on soloing I originally wanted to learn how to get blazing metal solos (which I still want) but ended up learning alot of jazzy bluesey solos.

Now I have nothing against jazz and blues (My teacher is a jazz guitarist and he's teaching me...danm some of that shit's hard) but I've been trying to learn how to do metal solo's by myself.

Have any of you guys got any scales/modes/warmups to help me learn.

You gotta learn some diatonic scales. You'll find scale references all over the internet. Heavy metal is largely in minor keys so learn the Aeolian mode (natural minor scale) first of all. You may or may not wish to acknowledge that the Aeolian mode is the 6th degree of the Major scale, but it is helpful to understand modes so you can absorb the theory a little better. Learn the intervals of the scale and not just fingering patterns because being able to fly all over the neck instead of playing in one "box" is basically a requirement in metal soloing unless you want it to get boring real fast. There are no secrets to it or anything. Just practice those scales until you can play them backwards, forwards and sideways and then let it rip. Some other modes you might use for minor key metal soloing would be Phrygian and Dorian. Again, just look around the internet a little for some diagrams and charts of these scales, same thing for warm up exercises.

The dorian is especially versatile, it can be bluesy and jazzy..... a la Carlos Santana, but also used in a hard rock/metal context. Locrian (diminished) is also widely used in jazz (John Coryell) but sounds wicked over heavy power chord progressions.
Its all in how you target the key tones...... hopefully your teacher is teaching you that if hes a good jazz/blues guy.

Those links are definitely nice. I've been playing guitar for almost 9 years and am finally getting into trying to learn the theory behind it all. Can anyone recommend a good site to get started? Most of the stuff I have looked at been way too over my head.

Also, when I do play notes that go with the 3 or 4 chords in our progression it just doesn't sound right on some notes. I know the root notes and stuff like that sound better than others but does anybody have tips for things to try or stay away from?
