ok, so ive been having trouble with my computer. I plug my headphones in my computer, it wont play any music whatsoever, media player itunes etc, but it can still give the sound of "error" or other basic windows noises, this common problem?

hmmm, its late and il give it another go in the morning i suppose

go to start/programs/accesories/volume contoll go to options/properties check all the boxes under playback and click ok. look for ant muted things and un mute them one by one auntill you get sound (i think it's sw wave) see if that works.

hope it helps

figured it out, when i have my mixer plugged in to my tower via usb, it wont play anything through my headphones which are also connected to my tower!

bizarre

You left out the most important piece of info on your original post: the fact that your mixer is usb. With it being usb, it bypasses your computers soundcard completely, making it the soundcard. Plug the phones into the mixer and you'll hear everything just fine.

ah nice one, im learning!

though today i couldnt get any sound onto cubase, werent picking up a thing, i despise my recording gear at the moment, i thought it was simple (ish!), deary me, recording for dummys please :(

Haha stick with it, it'll start making more sense as you progress.

What mixer do you have?

When getting started with cubase that is a typical tough spot. here are some basics:
You need to set up devices to have enough inputs and mapo them to the physical inputs on your interface.
You need to make sure you have input bus's set up similiarly
Each track needs to have the input mapped to the right item. Output is normally set to default, just make sure your interface's outputs go to the monitor channels.
int he mixer, make sure to turn on monitoring of inputs so you can see how your signals are hitting the track.
