Just to confuse the issue, further...
IF 18 feet is the "magical" length, why is it that snakes can often 100 feet or more, yet all seems to sound just fine?

My shortest snake is 100 feet (well, 30 metres to be precise). It's made up with a quality multicore cable (20 pair) from Van Damme (you can Google them) and quality connectors (Neutrik). The whole think cost a bit under $500 (I'm converting from pounds) for the equivalent of 20 x 100 foot cables which sound absolutely perfect.
When you see a stadium concert, their snakes are probably 300--500 feet each (though many multicores are being replaced with digital CAT5 or fibre stuff now).

Have you ever seen a snake that uses unbalanced cables? 1/4" can also be balanced and I have never seen a snake with unbalanced cables. So yeah, you can run those quite a long way before there's a problem.
