I am Purchasing the HD24 and an Imac G5 do i need dual processors or not to mix and master with protools???

You just asked a whole bunch of questions in one sentence, quite expertly...

No, you shouldn't need Dual processors to run Pro Tools, but it can help. More CPU power = more tracks, plugins etc. So, if you can afford the dual CPUs, go for it, but if you're a bit strapped, then you should save the money and stick with a single processor.

However, you're missing a few things here.
Which version of protools are you using?
How are you going to get the stuff off the HD24 and into the G5?
Do you have an input system for you G5, like a Digi002?

Well i am puchasing a digi 002 and a fireport. will that work??---J

Redundancy

If you are getting an HD24, then you should get a device so that you have the ability to mix all of the tracks, like a 24 Ch mixer. If you want to record with a computer base system like the Digi002, then you really don't need the HD24.

What are your recording goals?

It is ME in the flesh... or scales. My regular sign-on won't let me post for some reason. I need to send Dragon an email to look into it.

Fishmed is correct

Fishmed is right

You will need to get the data from the HD to your PC. I use the Alesis Fireport, but I believe there are several Digital I/O cards with ADAT light pipe available that might add more value (plugins and mic pre's etc.).

Do you want to retain the ability to record at a console or go completely over to the DAW?

I use an HD24 (very nice BTW) with a 24 channel A/B inline console - I like the "old school" feel I guess

Yeah, a console is just about a must have to go with the HD24 if for no other reason than to set up monitor mixes while tracking. I use a MOTU 2408 to do real time transfers in and out of a computer via Lightpipe.

You can always use ethernet to move your tracks from the HD24 to your DAW. It is extremely slow, but it works. If you have to do such transfers often, you'll probably want a Fireport instead.

Transferring audio via a lightpipe interface is a completely different process. It can certainly get the job done, but there's no error correction, nor is there any concept of "file". You simply press play on the HD24 and press record on the DAW. You decide when to start, and you decide when to stop. So you'd better be there at the end.

I just transferred a rather large recording from the HD24 to a hard drive via ethernet. It was 24 tracks of 24/44.1 audio, and the concert was almost three hours long. It took 20 hours to do the transfer (!), but I just let it do its job and it completed flawlessly. Obviously, this is not a solution if you need to do it often.

Do you already have any other gear? As some have mentioned, a console may be handy, if nothing else, to monitor you recordings. You are also going to need mic preamps to feed the HD24. Again, a console could serve this purpose. Mixing in PT-LE is fine, if PT-LE is what you want. I would definitely recommend the Fire-Port, especially if you are going with PT. None of the PT-LE interfaces will allow you to transfer 24 tracks at a time, that's where the FirePort will come in handy.

If you are up for using different software, an interface with 24i/o on lightpipe may make more sense for you. However, I can't think of any firewire options offhand. Someone mentioned the MOTU 2408, but that is a PCI device and will not work with an iMac.

We have an entire sound system...32 channel mixer eq's etc... and i am purchasing the fireport...--J

Theheat...

Are you are gonna track a live performance, via direct outs into the HD24, then transfer the tracks onto your Mac for re-mixing?

That is exactly how I record the bands I do FOH sound for. You'll definately want the Fireport for transfering from the Alesis hard drive to you Mac.

Are you are gonna track a live performance, via direct outs into the HD24, then transfer the tracks onto your Mac for re-mixing?...Yes my church would like to record live worship sets...Thanks for everyones help!!! Theheat..

fireport is the only way to go to transfer tracks short of the Motu2408...which I have and love. But the fireport is great for 200 bucks. Simple...I'm stupid and I got it on my first try. :)

Trackrat is very right. Console good. ;) You could use the "cuemix" if you ended up getting a motu 2408. That is the Motu's monitoring software program. It is kind of nice to use as a monitor, but console is MUCH nicer :)
