hmmm I'm lookin at some different soundcards here but I'm gonna start by listing every piece of musical equipment i am using to record...;

COMPUTER
amd k-6 533mhz (some kinda compaq)
192 mb ram
20 gig hd
1 cd rom 1 cd/rw rom
1 crusty dusty monitor
16b soundblaster crap

INSTRUMENTS
2 BC Rich warlocks (nice pointy axes)
1 El degas (first guitar it was cheap and black)
a few other various guitars mostly crap
1 recently purchased behringer xm2000ms cardoid mic (mic stand n cords too)
1 wee little white amp...10 watts...
1 peavey rage 158 (I'm currently using the above two amps for my mic)
1 behringer blue devil amp
1 behringer fcb 1010 foot controller
headphones picks beer and a baggie

SOFTWARE
win 98se (considering upgrade to xp good or bad idea?)
fruity loops and n- tracks and cool edit pro (i have none of these but given the shortcoming of funds I think starting out these are the best choices)

Theres actually more too soundcards here like upgrading my ancient email device but for now a good soundcard I think will do...
I plan to use the programs for recording strictly...my amp and footcontroller will provide guitar effects and what not...I can even fake a bass on here for now...I guess Ill need a wee bit o room for vocal effects too...the soundcard that seemed to catch my eye was this http://www.cdbm.com/shop/detail.cgi?id=114160 delta 66 omni studio? i think because it has mic preamps...does this mean I can just run my mic right into the card with no amps?..if so is there a cheaper alternative to this soundcard?...I know people spend a lot of money on gear but I have to be realistic here...plus Im pretty good at working with what i have...basically i think the tunes I will be doing are generally of the heavy variety...I know i posted sumthin below but possibly it was a little more vague? so ive tried to include everything i could think...oh yes in relation to my earlier posting...what kind of minmal upgrades can i do to my pc that will make it feasablew to use the programs listed above as well as the hardware...

Many thanks to those who provide their feedback :D

Compaq's are sometimes tricky to upgrade and get them to work anyway. The first step would be to go to compaq's site and search for compatable or incompatable soundcards and how to disable your onboard soundcard or which I beleive is an ess audiodrive based chipset. The delta seems to be a popular card there are many choices and more comeing up all the time. But first check out compaq to see if there are any limitations to your system and cards that will not work on it. Most times it will be a matter of selecting the card you want and disableing your onboard sound or setting it up to use either one a little more difficult then disableing it.

If you need to save a few bucks and you only need to record a couple tracks at a time you could pick up a M-Audio Audiophile 2496 and a M-Audio Audio Buddy mic pre/direct box for a total of $240.
