... and just basically went with the take that made me puke the least rather than finding something that didn't make me puke. i'm so lazy
Duuuuuude! I'm so with ya there!
I love the stereo spread on the acoustic. What'd you do there? Doesn't sound like it's doubled... stereo mic'ed? Killer tone on the drum loops. Guernica's bass kicks a not insignificant amount of ass. Some of the vocs are a little pitchy is spots... the bar is raised due to the overall quality.
I really like this dry. Ya know, I got into this habit where I started reaching for the EQs, and comps, and reverbs on tracks before I even sat down and spent a few minutes getting a dry push mix. It's a vocal track, so you compress it.. that's what you do to vocal tracks. This song provides yet another reminder to me: don't do that! Compress because the levels aren't as even as I want them. EQ because I hear something in there that needs a cut/boost. But don't just throw stuff in there just because.
Excellent song, excellent recording. Killer job in the tracking stage. This is a benchmark.
