Nilbog

hello
Okay, so I kinda dropped the ball on cars, but I'm getting the part in soon, and we've been discussing a new project.

Something a little "harder" sounding. Cars is a good song...but it's not our style. You know..since we have a style.

So I think Emeric is going to come up with something original...It's should be cooler this time.

Here's our lineup:
Guitars- Emeric
Bass- Me again (I'm on probation)
Drums- BigKahuna
Mixmaster- DrStawl
Vocals- Teddie, you got dibs if you want it. If not, anyone?

So everyone involved (or not) please post your input here.
I was thinking something with horns might be cool, too. Maybe not this song, but the next one? Just an idea...Do we have any horn players interested?

Okay, thats all for now.

Ok Nilbog,

I'm game. What style do you think? I got this sort of slow bluesy pattern i've been fooling with for a week (no, not the standard blues progression). Is a blues type thing ok? It's different though, more along the Gary Moore type blues. There is lots of space for non standard bass lines, drumming etc.

It may suck though, so I don't know. I'll work on it this evening and post something.

sounds good yo.. You should post the chord progression just to give me a head start..

I'll do a quick record after supper, and email you the secret location by 8:00 EST :) I don't know the chord names well enough.

ok, i'm a few hours late. Done. Got sidetracked, had to socialize for an hour or so. Rough Structure only.

Where do we go from here?

cool

Emeric gave me his 'rough' mp3 tonight. Fantastic. I really like the idea of an original tune. And this ones got potential. This file is something I can play to right?

Assuming that audiotracks.com will actually send my new soundcard on Monday ... I should be able to upload something for drstawl sometime next week. I'm assuming that I'll send him 8 mono files ... 8 tracks of drums for him to mix as he sees fit ... no effects ... but I probably will compress and gate to make it easier on him. Unless, of course, you want something different, doc. :)
Since I've never done this before ... I'm not sure of the format. mp3? wav? either?
and what should I do to help ensure an easy sync? should I mark the 'start' of the files I send in some way? if so, in what way?
Just wanna make it easy on the doc.
Let me know, ya?
Thanks guys...

oh yeah ... horns may not work for this one ... but I can probably play trumpet on another one ... and my bro can probably play trombone if needed.

hey BK,

8 mono's for sure. I assume you mean gate by removing unwanted noise by manually deleting it.

Have to see what the concensus is as far as this song goes. I can write lyrics to it if required. I'm having some problems encoding these days.. crackly distorion on occasion. weird.

-------

oh yeah, I guess it can be played to, the tempo and structure won't change. No click at the start, but maybe drums should'n't come in right away.

------

Wav is prefered, but you would be looking at around 200MB to email Doc. Snail mail, or individual, well encoded 196 mp3's.

I was actually thinking of using noise gates to tighten it up a bit ... my plan was to dump your file onto the adats and then record drums raw w/o comp or gate ... then when I 'mix' each individual file apply that stuff. no effects though. Ya know, on second thought ... I don't think I'lll mess with it, since doc can do all that on his PC. I'll just give him a raw unprocessed file for each track.
Yeah ... I didn't think drums should come in on the intro either ... maybe just some cymbal thing, if anything. That brings up a good point, though ... since this is an original that came out of your brain ... I'll send you a quick live mix of me playing to your mp3 for your review before I commit the drums. Just want to match your vision as best I can because theres a lot of options in the beat department (not that I know a whole lot of beats :) ).
I have to figure out how I'd get the files to doc. My bro has DSL so I can probably put em on a zip and go over there ... but I don't think AT&T will let me send anything over a 4MB file through their email ... bastards! Maybe I can upload to (gulp) idrive or xdrive or something. I'll figure it out, don't worry.

An envelope is pretty quick to.. 5 days, $5. and stays's in wav format.

If you like, sure send me a preview. Remember i'm on shitty modem access to so the lower the encoding the better :)

As far as vision go's. I suppose I have some idea in my head as to what it would sound like. But since it's so new I haven't dwelt on it. Just play whatever you think suits. If you need tracks without the beat, let me know, click tracks can be very annoying and impeding.

Cooler than Cars!

Hey, I'm diggin this tune! I've got all sorts of ideas for bass...I was wondering how we should handle the bass/drum thing? Which should come first, or is it that big of a deal? I dunno...I'd be cool to have the drums fairly inline with the bass...nowhadImean?

As far as lyrics, let's see if Teddie wants to write lyrics, I'll send him an email and see what's up. If he doesnt want to or (gasp!) he's not in for the project, then we'll see-whatever you want to do...Maybe work with Teddie somehow...

I'm gonna try to lay down something rough tonight.

Word up...this is way cooler than cars!

Wankers.....teasers......telling us how nice your tits are but not letting us cop a feel.......POST SOMETHING or we won't take you to the prom......our nuts are aching.....gibs

your right gibs. A post is possible. Up to the producer though.

:)

Big K:

If you're gonna separately mic and record the drums on several (say 8) tracks, I'd appreciate a CDR. Even super connected Bozo's like myself have bandwidth limitations.
I'm considering the ADAT route for local live recording gigs but don't own one yet, or the mixer needed to make that work. As to marking the tracks: A simple crack or two with something high frequency- click click etc. in the same spot (convenient right at the start, followed by a pause of ~1500ms) on each of the 8 tracks would work. Easy to add. Just turn on all 8 channels and crack a snare hard a couple of times.
Then all the tracks are aligned to each other.

This should be fun. It got Marilyn excited.

Gibs: Give us a chance to get something playable!
Posts for sure!

Hey guys,

I'm in!

Might need help on writing lyrics. I've been brain-toast lately with writing good lyrics. Maybe I can do up a skeleton of some lyrics and folks on the board can help me fill it with the muscle and skin and junk (what did I just say?).

Sorry, I've been away from the board for what seems to be quite some time.

Nilbog, thanks for the email letting me know this was happening.... cool!

So, what's up with Cars lately?

Teddie- Good to have you! I killed cars, and I'm so excited about this new song that I'll probably finish it first. But cars will be finished. Oh yes, cars will be finished.

Hey Teddie,

No big deal, just whatever you come up with. If you need any assistance/feedback whatever at all, email me. I like this whole concept, and it's a whole lotta fun. This is a fun project, just do it.. like that old commercial selling something or other.

Those were shoes supposedly made by juvenile slave laborers but what the hay. I still use that Company myself because I like their shoes. Just Screw It should be their motto!

Ok ... CDR no problem, doc. I'm not sure how I'd get my crack on the tape ... but I'll try. :D
I was hoping to be done by now, but my parents kinda dropped in without notice for the week. I did play a little to the tune early in the week and think that I have a couple good ideas, though. I need to calm down a little, though.
Real good point, nilbog ... if you want to get the bass going first, that's fine with me. If you get something going before next week, send me an email (bk2000@att.net) with the tune or url (hahah too bad Gibs ... no titties for you). I'm booked this weekend, but usually have time at night during the week to record. So I'm hoping to have something next week for sure. If we don't have bass by then, I'll just wing it. I'll probably still send Emeric at least a sample of the drums early in the week to make sure I'm not killing the feel ... I'll copy you on it nilbog.
See ya...

...and introducing Jon X in the role of Pete Best

I know I'm not a real drummer, and haven't had time to be around much lately, but at least tell me when I've been kicked out of the virtual band. :D So, can we keep the Cars tracks and release it 30 years from now so I can do an interview on Behind the Music talking about how I was the original drummer before you guys became famous and all?

Ahh, I'm really a guitar player that owns a couple of drums kits anyways.
