It's so hard choosing a "normal" career when you know what you really wanna do (music).

Dude, when you KNOW what you NEED to in life, (career wise) theres not much else that will satisfy you. Sure you can go work at *insert company name* and possibly make a lot of money, but if youre miserable all day and hate the thought of going into work everyday, whats the point?

Instead of doing research on "normal" careers, how about you do some research on what you said you really wanna do -- music.

I just went through this myself.... the whole "trying to figure out what kind of normal job i could settle with" deal. Tried to figure out what i should major in. I did the college thing for 2 years, but it just wasnt "hitting home" with me. I dont love to write papers and give speeches -- i love music.

So I'm going to full sail sometime early next year (after the FAFSA goes through) for recording arts & entertainment business. I know full sail isnt really the crowd favorite on this site, but its just something i gotta do. if i have to survive on bread and water the next 6 years, so be it. Whatever it takes for me to be able to do what i love doing.

Just something to think about... Im not saying that you should do the same as me, but at least think about what you truely want to do and go from there. Dont settle for something just because its "normal" and pays well.

...And if its the money part youre worried about, I mean, who makes more... your average computer guy, or timbaland?

how did i finance my studio? well i basically used about every paycheck ive received over the past two years to buy stuff lol. the bad: pretty much minimum wage jobs. the awesome: no expenses hahahaha!

example: my last whole $500 paycheck was spent on: radial JDI, drumagog, and a cad trion 8000 tube mic. :D

i think ive got over 10,000 worth of stuff now in my little studio now... cant believe it lol.

While mom and dad pay for your shelter and upkeep eh? Better enjoy it while you can. :) And don't EVER have kids. :)

Are you a teacher?

Joe

Landscape Architect :) I love the architecture/engineering side of life, but music is my escape at the end of the day. I've thought about this...if I were ever in a position to support my family with something in music or recording, I would probably have to practice on the side because I would miss LA if I was working in music most of the day. :)

My new thing is all scholarship money I get, I take half of that amount (if I have it in the bank) and put it into the studio. I.E., I just got a poetry scholarship for $500, so I went and bought some new monitors, Alesis M1 MKII Actives. :) It gets me to work harder towards scholarships, too, cause then I have more than just a less of a bill incentive anymore, haha.

Thanks for all the advice guys! Well, i've been struggling over job choices and all this mess for a while but i've realized that God has me right where i need to be. At my current job, i make $11 an hour but i'm still on temp part time status. I found out in January i'll be getting a raise and i'll be promoted to a regular employee instead of a temp one. I think i'll get my standard 40 hours a week then. If i go off my past raises ($1 a raise), i'd probably be making $12 and hour 40hrs a week. I think that's pretty good for a 21 yr old guy without a degree. Also, me and a guy at my church are about to start a record label. I was hesitant about the idea at first but i realized that i'm 21 and if i wanna be successful i gotta start making moves and taking risks NOW. I'm going to be the musician/producer/recording engineer. So, i might be asking alot more questions soon! My plan is that the label will be able to generate so much income that i'll eventually leave my job and do that full time(which is my dream!). I'm speaking it into existence guys. Thanks!

SOunds like a good start. Expect things to get in your way and give yourself the leniency to have failures, and use them to get through the next time.
