How to turn your old stereo speakers into the best sounding monitors you ever heard!

Bluebear.... Oh, that was just one long quote... I missed that. ;) Ok, you can forward my response to him if you like...

I give up... I tried to explain it to you myself and even brought others in!

Do whatever works for ya............. you're the one that has to like it........!

Incidently - I'd LOVE to hear a sample clip of a mix you did with and without EQ on the speakers............

I will return when I have one, but it might take a while...

I imagine that I'm quite difficult to discuss with... ;) Sorry for that... And thanks for trying to help me! After all, that's what you have tried to do...

BTW, I checked that other thread, and the main argument for not to EQ is that real monitors not are flat either in an ordinary room, even if they try to be? Or? That was my impression...

Ok, but take care, no hard feelings from me. I will try to return with two different mixes when I have the time....

This thread is like a 7 car pileup.

Boray, You seem to be taking the position that this is a subjective area. There are many aspects of recording that are subjective but there are also certain aspects that are governed by the laws of physics.

We would be fools to tell you your speakers dont "sound good" because we obviously can't hear them. But you would be a fool to consider your system a "reference monitor". I dont mean that as an insult or a challenge to your ears or ability.

The methods you use to aquire your results are fundamentaly flawed according to the laws of physics and violate the whole purpose behind a reference monitoring system.

The point that I believe most are trying to make is that you may be a very talented musician and possibly a mixing prodigy just please dont try to promote your system as a replacement for reference monitors because it probably won't work for others who are not blessed with an acoustically perfect room and you will be wasting their time.

Still going!

Nothing outlasts this thread!

i think that if you want to make a leslie speaker out of a turntable you should have your driver element suspended above the turntable in a fixed position firing down.

resting on the turntable could be a cardboard tube like a toilet paper tube only much larger with a 12" diameter and a hole in the side.

the driver could be in a sealed enclosure with a slightly smaller tube than the other attatched to the baffle.

see?

the speaker and slightly smaller tube would be in a fixed position and the tube on the turntable would spin.

most of the sound would exit the hole on the side of the spinning tube and you would obtain the desired doppler effect!

that would handle the rotor portion, but then you wouldnt get the horn, which is the real sound of the leslie, especially for organ. I say, use the turntable for the rotor, and then have a tweeter fixed to the blade of a cieling fan, with a dummy tweeter on the oposite blade.

QED

the tweeter wires would get tangled in the fan.

you could have a dipole tweeter which radiates 360 degrees. have that mounted to the turntable base in a fixed position and have a cardboard horn spin around on the turntable.

I just added this in the beginning of my original post, so I hope you are happy now:

WARNING: Or to clarify a bit more for everyone who got blinded by the topic and feel offended by this post: THIS WON'T REPLACE REAL PRO MONITORS! (As if anyone would be that stupid that you actually believed that). It's a way of drastically improve the performance of your existing speakers/monitors with no additional equipment. This COULD work for you if you have very good dry acoustics in your room and if you know what you are doing, but I can't guarantee anything! There is more to this than just the irregularities of your old speakers, for example the dimensions of your "bedroom studio" that can (and will) make different frequencies in the bass bands to be lower or higher than they should be. So be aware! Follow the link to HomeRecording BBS in a post below, and you will find hundreds of post against this method + a lot of posts from me defending the idea (mainly why it works for me) and why I for example think that my method COULD be better than the "white noise" method. My enthusiasm in THIS post is mainly because I noted such an improvement myself.

this is all much ado about nothing. silly stuff.

true audiophiles abhor tone controls of any kind. a boutique audio preamp should NOT have tone controls and a true audiophile would not have a graphic equalizer on a stereo system.

a graphic EQ is a distortion device. if you use a tone generator to send a pure sine wave through a graphic equalizer set flat then the equalizer will distort the signal to some degree. potentiometers always distort a signal. if you start moving the faders then you will increase the distortion. how could this be not so? if you disagree with this then you are not a real person at all but a contradick who is purposely playing the part of the fool.

the degree to which you move the faders is the degree to which you increase total distortion levels. if you like the sound of lots of EQ then you like the sound of lots of distortion. this is akin to saying if you like lots of candy then you like lots of sweets.

if your system sounds bad to begin with then a graphic EQ is not going to solve your problems.

lousy speakers with even more distortion added will still sound lousy. its silly to suggest otherwise.

As evidenced by this last bit of yours - it's very obvious that you totally missed the point of what everyone was saying Boray. BUT as I said, I give up trying to explain it to you.........

Good luck with your mixing -- you're going to need it...!

BlueBear: So you think it was a bad idea to add this warning or what? If you say you have given up, why do you keep on commenting everything? What have I missed? That some "experts" thinks that I should dump my old stereo and buy some real monitors? I don't think I have missed that... Thanks for your good luck wishes - because you really wished me good luck there and didn't say it as a sarcasm. Thank you very much for "trying to help me" so very much!!!

anders,

you seem like a relatively nice well-meaning troll. the fact that you have gotten so many bites shows that you are a very successful troll.

you are pulling everbody's strings and appear to be enjoying all the attention immensely.

perhaps a lack of resources and skewed priorities are compelling you to justify your sad situation to yourself and, loudly and persistently, to the whole world?

"look at me everybody i am lame but its a very noble kind of lame and therefore i am morally superior to everybody else in the whole world. anyone who disagrees with me or says i am lame is a mean person but i will try to convince them with silly pseudo science that everybody can be right in their own way so why not just accept me and be happy for me blah blah blah... "

you silly guy you!

Wascal - Look at me, I'm the fun guy that can tell increadibly funny jokes on other's expence. Because it's so amazingly funny to make fun of someone that everyone else allready is critisising. That will sure make me popular on this new BBS that I found. Good idea! Let's try to play psycologist a bit too. Yes that's fun and will make me even more popular... Yes wascal, you will fit in here allright, don't you worry, you will be BlueBears best friend in no time!

I'm out of here now... I wrote a good warning text in the beginning of my original post, sending people to read all your posts in this thread. What more can I do? You can't just accept the fact that I reject your advices, because that's bad for your self-esteem as one of the guys who knows better on this BBS. That's too bad, but what can I do about that? I guess I'm just a nut ;) that you couldn't crack... I can see your point of view: you have learned that something MUST be done in a particular way. This is a fact and absolute truth for you. And here I come rejecting this "truth"... Must be hard for you... But I don't understand what still is anoying you? I guess it is that you simply don't have enough knowledge to prove I'm wrong while I still am around to pick your arguments apart. (Yes laugh here if you like). So I will help you now by permanently go away from this BBS. I said that I wouldn't write anything more before (I'm not perfect), but now I will not even read anything more in this thread. So if you want to tell me something from here on (for some reason), you have to email.

Good bye!
/Anders

anders we will see you again because you cant stand to let anybody else have the last word!

We provided plenty of info as to why your crackpot theory is wrong - you just don't want to believe it, or you just like to argue, making you a troll - pure and simple...............

Bye!

To a Reel Person:
Wonderful command of the english language! You're even dumber than Zeke - you must reside in Mississippi, right?
I'll bet you get an employee discount on Midol at the Wal Mart you work at. Good luck my blue vested idiot - leave the subject of recording to the pros.

BG, I've been reeading along on this thread and I'm just wondering, what's your background in recording?
