I can pick one up 2nd hand, but there's no power indicator lights on it so I wonder how can I test if it actually works, without making the seller too grumpy?

You should be able to hear or feel vibration when the degausser is on. You can also bring it near a computer monitor... some wavy lines or color changes should be visible.

Depending on how powerful it is it may or may not pick up a metal paperclip. The TEAC E-3 will pick up a small paperclip, but not a single-edge razor blade. The Annis Hand-D-Mag will pick up a spoon.

You realize, of course, that immediately upon reading this, like any red-blooded gadget-owning guy, I had to get up and grab my Han-D-Mag and fish a clean spoon out of the dishwasher, right?

Sure enough, it works. :D Except that my Han-D-Mag does not make any detectable vibration or noise until it nears ferrous metal. Then it sucks it in like a vacuum cleaner!

Great, thanks a lot. I hoped it would be easy as this. Gonna pick it up tomorrow.

Good man! :D

Okay, I picked it up. No spoons picking up for me, it can actually barely move a paperclip but it does make it vibrate... I hope it's strong enough to actually do what it's supposed to do? Do I need to keep it to the heads longer now or...? I find it a scary process, so I'd rather get it right :)
